I'm going to get a custom pitching/flippin/jig rod built for me soon. I know the action I want, but I'm still trying to decide on length. My builder has 7' rods in stock, but will also build me a 7' + rod if I want. So my question, is their a noticable difference in pitching(distance and accuracy) with a 7 foot rod vs. a 7 foot 3-6 inch rod, assuming the grip length is constant?

I had surgery a while back on my pitching arm(baseball and fishing pitching, with the first causing the problem), and I lost a lot of the fast twitch muscles. I have a 7 foot rod right now that I pitch with, but I feel like i should be able to pitch it further then I am, and with less effort, which should increase accuracy. I figured that a little extra length might help. Any input is appreciated.

I feel for you man. Elbow issues suck. Personal preference I think. I am a stout advocate of longer rods because they are easier to generate speed on a longer arching swing. For me, 7-3 and 7-6 and even 8-0 rods. I like 7-6 best because I transition from F & P to regular flippin alot and 7-6 does both well. I hope your rehab goes well and a new rod increases the blood flow to the effected area.

7'6 is a good flipping/pitching rod. with your arm, i wouldnt go anything less than 7'.

flipping and pitching is like peanut butter and jam.they go well together but the are completly different.

i like a rod over 7 feet for flipping,and 6'10 to 7'2 for pitching.

i have tried using rods up to 8 feet to see if it helps get more distance(pitching),to me i gain nothing.i can pitch up to 30 feet smoothly with my 6'3 heavy fast cumara, and i cant seem to get further with a longer rod.

so to me i use rods in the 7 foot range.balance is way better and their lighter.

just make sure it has a bit of tip to it,as it wont wear you at as fast.

I use a Dobyns 766FLIP and 805C for punching/flipping (respectively). I absolutely love the 8' length of the 805. I see no downside to the longer length, as long as it fits in your rod box. I hear people talk about fatique, but that 1.5oz weight you're flipping adds much more torque on your body than the added six inches of rod. I tend to discount the fatigue factor when discussing flipping, anyway....throwing swimbaits/frogs all day long is much more fatiguing than any kind of flipping.

If Dobyns made a 8'6" flipping stick (865?) I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

i use a dobyns 735c for pitching/flipping. i love the in between length of the 7'3" rod. imo its the best of both worlds. that rod is also used for jigs. anyway, i like a 7'6" as well. as stated above the dobyns 766flip. i wouldnt use anything shorter than 7'3" but thats just me.

I'd say 7'6''. I'm about to build a Jig rod myself. What blank are you looking at? I fish from a Kayak more than my boat and I find it easier to set the hook on a longer handled rod also.

Thanks guys, I think i will go with a longer then then 7, probably somewhere around 7' 4-6". I thought the extra length was probably appreciated.

The blank, not sure exactly where he gets them. JB custom rods is the builder. I have the "snake" rod right now and its scary sensitive, like on a level i didn't think was possible. That's why I'm get one built, verse buying one already 7' +.

I guess it could depend on how tall you are. I'm 6'3" and my favorite f and p rod is my falcon cara amistad. 7'3". I also have a carrot stix 7'9" extra heavy that does well but i don't feel like its any better than the cara. I also pitch in a ton of cypress trees in some places and the extra 6 inches can become cumbersome in those tight quarters. I think anything over 7' will be fine for you.

The longer rod will help flipping since you're using a static line length. The longer pendulum probably helps some but not like when fully loading a longer rod. I use the same rod for both and modify the cast depending on the distance to my target. I find 7'6" as a good happy medium and I'm not real tall.
