Alabama Rigs

Who uses them? I am considering buying one and using it this spring. Any recommendations?

Save some money and buy a knockoff. Many of them are built a lot better than the original. I would recommend the one I've been using for the past few weeks. It's made by a company owned by JJ of JJ's Magic. The call it the Ol' Nelle Umbrella. It's has held up to some serious abuse and has saved the day a few times.

After the way the owners of the original have acted towards kids on u-tube, I would not buy the original. Any of the knock offs or get your self some piano wire and make your own.

what type of knot should be used when using braid on the A-rig?

Or you could just use a Palomar like most people do when using braid.

Don't use a knot on the rig at all. Tie a 100# coastlock snapswivel to your line with your favorite knot and attach the rig to the snapswivel.

The important features of the umbrella rigs are the durability of the components; the wire should be stainless with high memory, the head should be light weight and strong, the swivel clip should be high quality like Berkley cross-lok or equal.

The last I looked nearly every major lure maker offers the umbrella/A-rigs. Yum and Luck E Strike for example make a moderate priced umbrella rig in the $15 range.

Remember the umbrella is like casting a rake and will snag everything, so use heavy tackle and superbraid or will loose the rig quickly.

There are some very good reason to buy other brands. I just picked up a couple with the resin head from Picasso. It's light, works PERFECT with 1/8 oz. ballheads and 3-4" Keitech Swing Impacts. And it already has a swivel for a line tie to boot! The whole thing is less than 2 oz. FINESSE UMBRELLA! LOL.

Those are the same rigs I bought. And today Noel and I just made some 1/4 and 1/8 oz ball heads for use with them LOL.

You'll like them. Got use mine in the casting pool at the dome this weekend. Preliminary advice: pour more 1/8 oz. ball heads.
