I just wanted to get some input from some of you older guys on what old crankbaits you like. Anything from Poes to WEC. I just want to see some opinions.

Poes, pre-mexico

Older Bagley Alpha baits

Pre-Rapala Wiggle Warts

Rebel Super R

Original Spence Scout

Original Rapala Fat Raps

Posted

Rebel deep Humbacks

Heddon Tad Poly

The original old Bagley baits and the orginal Wiggle Warts.

Bagley DB3's (my favorite being the original version with the straight, unreinforced lip).   A lot of the other Bagleys as well.

Pete Reynold's "Little Petey"

Zoom WEC's Z-Flat coffin lip and Lexan lipped Wobbler, as well as the Deep Stumpy

I would say old Poe's, but I keep in mind the quality on these baits was NEVER really that great.  I have original "Made in California" Poe's with crooked lips and some of the worst hardware locating you've ever seen.  The body carving is very inconsistent as well.  The design has always been a good one - the execution has most certainly not.

Ron-E-Bee or Richard Manley cranks......if you're ever lucky enough to find any.

Lucky Craft Flat CB SR's

Rapala Shallow Fat Raps

Arbogast Mud Bugs and Original Bombers

As far as I can tell, the new "old" Wiggle Warts work as well as the old ones.

Any of the WEC baits (though I don't really think of them as that old)

One of my all time favorite older baits is the Bomber Speed Shad but like many crankbaits out there.  The older ones are much better.

I don't know about the best

my favorites

The Original Balsa BIG O,  not those Cabelas copies

Wooden Spence Scouts

SHAD RAPS

Posted

Rebel Wee-R in the original baby bass color, they dont offer the color anymore.

Not so vintage but no longer available, Rapala DDRFR, Down Deep Rattlin Fat Rap, in shad.

Anytime I come accross either of these lures I buy them up, heck I'll even trade a Lucky Craft for them.

I agree with the Mud Bug, Hellbender, and original Bombers, I have caught many bass on those, they are classics.

I just can't seem to find a new "old" Wiggle Wart that is as good as the originals. I had a tackle box full of those and caught bass after bass on them. I still have some left and side by side they just seem to be better for me than the new ones. I can feel the action more with the old ones and they just take off to the side better. I am not saying you guys are all wrong, Raul has a good theory about these.

Another great bait was the original Rebel Wee R, the new ones are just not the same, they feel lighter and the finish is different.

Agreed on the old wiggle warts and poes

old thundersticks

the older Mann's 15+ I do not know nor can I figure out what the difference is but I catch 3 to 1 on the older as opposed to the newer ones. >:(

Rapala Shad Raps, I've been using these for more years than I care to admit, and they still put alot of fish in my livewell. Another is the original Rebel Wee R in Crawdad.

Older Guys? I resemble that remark!

Bagley's DB3 or Deep Killer B's.

Mudbug.

Wiggle Warts.

Rebel Deep Wee R.

Spoonplugs for trolling.

Could go on but at my age my mind tends to wander. :(

Bagley BB2, BB3, DB1, & DB2 - Manufactured prior to 1980. I was smart enough to purchase enough that I still have a good supply of each still in the original packaging.

Arbogast Mud Bug (1/4 & 5/8 oz.) - Still the best crankbait for cranking wood I've ever used.

Strike King Spence Scout (wooden) and the Cordell Water Scout (plastic)

Strike King Big S

Rebel Mini R and Deep Mini R

Rebel Wee R (shallow and deep diver)

Tennessee Shad - A balsa wood crankbait that has been out of production for at least 20 years. I keep repainting the one's I have as it is one of my favorite crankbaits in the Atchafalaya Basin in the summer and fall.

Is it sad that I've got a tackle box at my parent's house that was my grandfather's before he died. I had already taken a handfull of cranks out of it based solely on the this one looks newer than that one, or these hooks aren't rusted! I know he's got a dozen hellbenders in there but I've never thought much of them. Guess I'll have to give it another once over!

Cordell Big-O

Heddon Sonic

Jitterbug

Humpback Rebel

I must admit that i am the same way, i dont use my old baits unless i have backups. I would hate to catch a boat load on them and not have another for my partner or incase you do the dreaded ( Loose one ).

Pre- rapala wiggle warts, Bill Dance Fat Frees, Risto Raps, Fat Raps.

These are the main ones, its sad but i catch more fish on the old wiggle warts than the new ones.

They are pricey but the way i look at it, its just like buying a

Lucky Craft.

Hellbenders are the best crank bait ever made. I have fished them religiously for 40 years and have never run across anything that could match them for trolling or casting, period. I would love to know what you found in that tackle box as I collect the rascals, too. Can't go wrong with a hellbender.
