What do you guys think about the new Abu Garcia Revo, the MGX?

I just spooled one up and spent the day on the lake with it, and all I can say is....impressive!

I think Abu has a winner with this beast, not that ANY of their other reels are lacking, but comparing the MGX to the STX and even the Premier....well, the MGX rocks!

The new centrifugal braking system used on the MGX is stellar!

I've handled them twice now and I'm very impressed. I did read reviews on TW that the brakes were a bit fragile and a few guys had problems with them. The reel is very smooth for a high gear ratio reel.

Ive been wanting one for my 7'Smoke rod for an 8.8oz set-up. No stores locally have them yet so havent handle one.

Is it quiet operation or any whines at all?

post pics if you can that would be nice.

Yep, it rocks. I handled it at ICAST last July and was very impressed. It's incredibly light, and has a smooth gear system.

Here's the video I shot with Iaconelli on it: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/villian-revo-video.html

Whines? As far as 'gear' noise... none. I can't even feel the 'mesh' of the gears as I reel. And this is right out of the box. The Premier exhibited a slight 'meshing' of the gear train when I would reel, when it was new, but after a couple of miles on it, and a few cleanings and lubes with Mil-Comm TW25 grease, the Premier has zero mesh feel or noise.

The gears of the Premier and the MGX are coated with some kind of super hard plating, so your going to have some measurable noise and meshing vibration, but I think a man would have to pay close attention to it to hear or feel anything at all!

There is zero bearing noise, at the cast or retrieve and the brake is quiet. The handle is spot on for balance, I mean for a 7.9:1 retrieve reel, cranking it fast, there is no wobble.

The weight is sweet, I have it on a 7'-3" micro guide carrot stick, spooled with 20lb FC and the rig weighs 9.3oz. In comparison, I have the same model rod with a Premier on it, loaded with 20lb FC, and it weighs 10.6oz.

And finally...a lube port!

OK thanks Salmoides for that info.

In that video he mentions it weighs under a pound?? uhh

It does weigh under a pound, 5.4 ounces

I'm not a fan of lube ports. Throwing new lube over old is of little or no benefit and could do more harm than good. If you do decide to use the port, only use it in between regular service and not in place of.

Thats what he should have emphasized or under 1/2 pound just thought it odd to descrbe it in such a way.
