NasTMcfingas Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Bought my first jerkbait today Lucky Craft 128sp Ghost Minnow. I just had some general questions on what this bait does or suppose to do. Once I get the bait down to the depth that I want and I pause the bait does these baits stay at that depth or will it float back to the surface? like I said I've never owned any and just wanted a heads up before I hit the water. Any info will definetly be appreciated. Quote
bigtimfish Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I honestly do not know about LC's. But the way I fish jerks (mostly suspending jerks) is crank them down to the max diving depth, then pause. Jerk it a few times(usually 4-6)and pause. Mix up the # of jerks between pauses. On floating jerks I keep my pauses short. It just takes practice, and is one of my most productive styles of fishing. Super User roadwarrior Posted August 6, 2009 Super User Posted August 6, 2009 The Lucky Craft suspend perfectly and continue to vibrate even when they appear still. To fish the lure reel down quickly to get the Pointer to depth. Let it sit for ten seconds or so before starting your retrieve. A common cadence is jerk-jerk-pause...jerk-jerk-jerk-pause... jerk- long pause. Use your imagination. The retrieve is sometimes fast, sometimes slow, you just have to experiment. 8-) Quote
NasTMcfingas Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Thanks for the info, I'm going to try to hit the water today and give her a shot. I've just heard so much about these baits and I felt as if I was missing out. I'll let yall know how it goes. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 6, 2009 Super User Posted August 6, 2009 Use longer pauses in the cold water period and shorter pauses in the warm water, like now. It's a killer! Quote
NasTMcfingas Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 Jerk, jerk, pause, jerk pause, jerk WHAM !!!! Dwarfed my 5inch Ghost Minnow, but this bait rises to the surface. I thought that a suspending bait would stay down at the depth that you crank it to or am I wrong ? Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 7, 2009 Super User Posted August 7, 2009 That's a nice bass! Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 7, 2009 Super User Posted August 7, 2009 The pointer SP is supposed to suspend. Quote
bigtimfish Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Are you cranking it down to it's max depth before you start your jerks? Give your reel handle about 8 cranks before you start your jerk/pause retrieve. Nice fish BTW Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 7, 2009 Super User Posted August 7, 2009 The Pointer does not float or sink. Although I have never had a defective Lucky Craft, yours may be. Check it out in clear, shallow water or your bathtub. Return the lure for exchange if it does not suspend. 8-) Quote
fathom Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 can't speak to the 128...it is the one size lc i have not used. that said, all my lc jerkbaits suspend perfectly at water temps 55 degrees or cooler. at higher water temps, almost all mine (flashminnows, pointers, slender pointers, staysees) actually sink...very, very slowly but still, they sink...the husky jerks i have used sink, as well, in the higher water temps. line size may have something to do with this, as well...i tend to use a heavier line than most (12# yozuri hybrid)...ymmv here. as mentioned above, you can always return it if not satisfied but, it looks to me you've learned the art of jerkbaits quite well. 8-) nice fish. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I don't recall where I got them but I had some stick-on weights that looked like a small round dot. They could be added to make a floater suspend or fine tune a suspending lure for neutral buoyancy. Anyone else ever use these? Quote
NasTMcfingas Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 I'll give it a few more cranks before I start my jerk/pause just to see if it is me or the bait. All in all great experience I had no friends and my son wasn't with me and I caught five all about that size. I have never owned or used a bait this large before, but I will definetly be adding some more of these jerkbaits to my recipe. Thank you all for the heads up on what these are supposed to be doing. Bass Junkie Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Glad to see jerks are workin' for ya!! What Delaware Valley Mike was talkin' bout was Storm Suspend Dots. They also come in strips. Josh Bassman Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I fish a large deep clear lake. Last week the surface temp. was 81 degrees. Would you fish a jerkbait in these conditions? Quote
bigtimfish Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I fish a large deep clear lake. Last week the surface temp. was 81 degrees. Would you fish a jerkbait in these conditions? It depends on if your jerkbait will get down to the depths that the fish are at. Pesonally if the fish are suspending between 15' to 18' I am not gonna throw a jerkbait. My deepest one runs to 10' max.IMO that's Bandit 700 time Quote
