Super User roadwarrior Posted June 21, 2011 Super User Posted June 21, 2011 Dateline: Saturday June, 18 on Pickwick Hit the water at 5:30 AM. Started with the Megabass PopMax. First fish on the second cast, then non-stop action until the sun hit the water. Switched to the Rage Tail Thumper, Red Shad which actually looks purple in the water. I rigged the worm with 1/4 oz tungsten bullet weight; black bead; #12Yo-Zuri Hybrid and #6 Moaner Hook. Rod & reel combo consisted of a Calais saddled to a St. Croix EC70MHF. Around 50 largemouth were boated before noon. My partner could not buy a bite until he made the switch. We didn't catch anything big, ~4 lbs tops. The bite was in 10'-15' of water along a drop about 50' wide, 30 yards or so off shore, 2 miles long. Best results were in areas fed by creeks, outside the mouth of a number of small coves. The technique was cast and drift or a slow retrieve, but no hopping! We cast AWAY from the shoreline bringing the bait into and out of the deeper water. The structure is much like a trench with 3'-4' of water on either side (inside and out). Stumps and debris is scattered along the bottom. The current was modest, but enough to stir things up. The bad news was the TVA water release schedule. When they turned off the water, they turned off the fish. Bummer... B) Quote
Fat-G Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I REALLY love your reports RW. Good job, keep them coming! Gear question - do you ever have problems setting the hook with the stretch of a non-braided line? I switched to braid because I hated the stretch. Quote
Big-O Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 WTG RW and thanks for the detailed report!!! Sounds very much like what our fish are doing here in Tx. Bet they'll be there again, next time the water moves Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 21, 2011 Super User Posted June 21, 2011 So the #6 size worked well for you. I was going to use #4 thought it might be too small but see it should be fine. Quote
ICU812 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Wow that's a great report! Thanks for the details it really helps those of us still learning! Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted June 22, 2011 BassResource.com Administrator Posted June 22, 2011 What size Thumper? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 22, 2011 Author Super User Posted June 22, 2011 I was fishing the 10" Thumper, but I have had great luck with the 7", too. The bite was hot, but my buddy couldn't get anything going on a variety of other baits. He had several new plastics he wanted to fish, so he did! However, the Thumper proved to be the ticket. I rigged up one of his rods, handed it to him and said, "Give this a try." My friend caught his best fish of the day on his first cast, followed by two more back-to-back. Three fish on three casts after 3+ hours of nothing. When things like this happen, it's like...WOW! Quote
Super User CWB Posted June 29, 2011 Super User Posted June 29, 2011 So the #6 size worked well for you. I was going to use #4 thought it might be too small but see it should be fine. I prefer a 5/0 hook myself but if a tiny # 6 works, go for it! Seriously, sounds like a great day Kent. Pickwick rocks! Quote
Big-O Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I've never fished your lakes when that bite is HOTT... Sure would like to though Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
