Limpinglogan Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 What is stopping me from having multiple hooks up my line so that I have a lure at several levels of strike zone. I could have a hook 12" of the bottom and 24" and still cast no problem and have double the odds? I might even be able to get a third hook on there but it would be hard to cast. Is this a bad idea? It seems like I can target more fish...just an idea any thoughts? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I would be worried about line strength having multiple knots. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I would be worried about line strength having multiple knots. I see your point, but Carolina rigs usually have three knots (main line-swivel, swivel-leader, leader-hook) and they work out fine, granted, you're typically using heavier line with a c-rig so that may be why losing a little bit of strength with multiple knots isn't a factor. I say try it out fun fishing, if it works, great, if not, no big deal. Quote
soccplayer07 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Great point. I use similar rigs for surf fishing and it can become a mess very quickly. However, I agree, try it and see what happens. Quote
ominousone Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 If you are casting a dropshot it would probably be more of a problem than if you are dropshotting deep water with electronics and just dropping the line at the boat side. I know that through the Ice we jig for smelt with at least 2 hooks at different depth's tied with palomars. You can leave as long of a leader that you want with a palomer and then tie another. Quote
etommy28 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 for sure, i have used 2 or 3 hooks, with 2 i tie them at about 10 inches and 16(so the worm is just above the 2 hook hanging limp) and for 3 they are at 8, 14, 20 inches. I have caught 2 fish at once one time, not huge but it was funny. Quote
MNGeorge Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 You may want to check your state fishing regs. Here in Minnesota, that rig would be illegal for open water fishing. Quote

Nothing at all, in fact dropshotting is derived from an old method that dates back into the 50's called a "chicken rig", 2 or 3 hooks with sinker on bottom, people use it every day in saltwater. Ever seen a sabiki rig? 6 hooks tied on main line with sinker on bottom, used to catch bait. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 7, 2009 Super User Posted June 7, 2009 Use jig and pig as your drop shot weight. Place upper hooks as you wish and give your theory a try. Quote

X2 - besides that, it would be a bear to cast without tangling. And then again, since this is a finesse presentation, using light line, just imagine if you hooked into two 3 - 4 pound small mouths! What do you think the odds would be of landing either? Quote

bigtimfish Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 I've done it, it works. I did a tx rigged and pegged 6" lizard on bottom with a lil zoom finnesse worm up top. About 20" apart. Quote
