justfishin Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hey guys, try the LC Slender Pointer, and tell me what you think. This is the new hot thing here for the river smallie guys here. Every year its something, lol. No, I am not a big LC fan. Too pricey for what they do. I will stick with my good ole' Rapala Husky Jerks and Rogues. Man, my age is really starting to show. I don't follow the trends. I just use what works. The year before it was the Skitter Pops and I stayed with my Zara Spooks, the year before that it was Baby Brush Hogs and I stayed with my tubes, the year before that it was the Titanium spinnerbaits and I stayed with my Big Mouth Lure spinnerbaits and War Eagles, etc, etc, etc. I look forward ever year to the new " Hot Bait " though, its fun to watch everyone scramble to find them and buy all they can get, lol. ;D www.bigmouthlures.com www.wareaglelures.com Quote
Super User Munkin Posted August 18, 2007 Super User Posted August 18, 2007 Thanks! Now no-one will want to trade them to me? Seriously I have been catching more fish in the UP than any other jerkbait in the fall. The only problem is I end up breaking the bills by hitting rocks or the TM head. Allen Quote
justfishin Posted August 19, 2007 Author Posted August 19, 2007 Munkin, no, not you too. Those pricey LC's. I am shocked. And you are a home boy!!! I guess I will have to go to Taylors this winter when the river is lower and get all the ones you lost on the ledges in the Horsebacks!!!,lol. ;D Did L. Shank talk you into buying those da** things? Super User Munkin Posted August 22, 2007 Super User Posted August 22, 2007 What are you talking about LC are cheap compared to Megabass? While I am a Smithwick Rogue fan I have to say in clear spring or fall water a LC will outfish just about any other jerkbait. I thinkk Rogue and Rapala with their Husky Jerk need to produce a transparent/translucent "ghost minnow" color to compete? In clear water they shy away from a opaque colored bait and that is where a LC shines. I will admit that last spring a xcaliber XS4 bait in ghost was my go-to over LC but it is still a $10 bait. Jerkbaits are one of my main strong points and I consider myself a semi-expert on fishing them in the river. Larry has a secret lure that no-one has heard about called a tube? Allen Quote
justfishin Posted August 22, 2007 Author Posted August 22, 2007 LOL, Nothing L. S. has is a secret. Have you noticed how much those Walleye love those Jerkbaits? I don't fish for them but, a guy whom we call " Mr. Walleye " fishes for them exclusivly between Dam #4 and Shepardstown and I talk to him from time to time, real nice guy by the way, and he said to use this and that, and one thing he had mentioned was a Rogue or Husky Jerk in silver with a blue back. I put one on one day up around #4 and cleaned up on them. I had two over 25 inches. I could not believe it. Pretty cool stuff. He said Jan and Feb are the best times for them if the river is not froze over. I am smallie fishing then but, I will give the Walleye a shot now and again. Plus, they are delicious. Quote
Guest btlva Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 alright another war eagle user! I don't use any other brand of spinnerbait. I've used the slender pointer a little bit. it's a nice bait but I like the original pointers better, they're great in ghost minnow and american shad. I use them in waters that get alot of pressure. husky jerks and rogues are awesome, especially on my wallet. Quote
smallfry Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I was catching fish on a jerkbait this spring and the guy in the back of my boat (who wasn't) says "Oh, an Ayu color Pointer, I've got one of those." He tied his on and we both caught about the same number of fish from then on. Afterwards I told him it wasn't a LC I was throwing, but a berkley suspending firestick that was about a fourth the price. I told him that just made his fish all that much more valuable than mine. That day the fish didn't seem to have a preference between the two. BTW, the "hot" bait for walleyes right now around my parts is the $2.99 flickershad. I've found the purple tiger color quite effective for bass too, especially if small bluegill are around... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 22, 2007 Super User Posted August 22, 2007 I'm just starting my Slender collection. I ran into Mike Whitten (Gary Yamamoto's Inside Line magazine) at the local BPS last spring. He fishes Pickwick and the Tennesse river and specializes in smallmouth, too. A couple of years ago Mike turned me on to the Ledgebuster Single Willow Blade spinnerbait, this year he was killin' 'em on the LC Slender Pointer. I can't say I have fished them enough myself to report anything special, but Mike is NEVER wrong! BTW, The season is EXACTLY 30 days away here. 8-) Quote
justfishin Posted August 22, 2007 Author Posted August 22, 2007 RW, a few years back I was working a table at the Baltimore Boat Show and got to talking to Woo Daves whom was helping with his friend whom owns Gator Rods out of Fla. ( check them out ) and we went and got some hotdogs and B.S.ed for awile. I was complaining about the fish in the summer on a lake near me and he was a fan of The Ledge Busters. I bought some and never looked back. They are great on the deep points up here in the summer. Hey, I am going to by some LC Slender Pointers too. I am as bad as the next guy listening to all the boat ramp talk. I just never admit it to anyone, lol. ;D Quote
Super User Munkin Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 Slender pointer 97MR is my #1 fall clear water bait! I caught close to 70 fish on day last September on the UP including a 13" sunfish. If you want to see a collection of expensive Japanese jerkbaits stop by my house some time? The bait monkey knows they are my weakness and he uses it against me. :-[ I have went as far as installing Japanese translation software to try and buy them from Japanese sites. My next bait to find is a Evergreen Side Step minnow but the only place I can find them is Ichiban tackle and I do not want to pay $15 to ship a $16 lure. Allen Quote
