carrothead Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Anyone use a Rapala Husky Jerk for bass? I know it's mostly for northern fish, but it seems like it would be a pretty good jerkbait. Quote
Nitro-bass Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I've used a husky jerk for LMB with some success. On lakes that I usually use a soft plastic jerk bait I will use the husky jerk when the water gets stained. The husky jerk makes more noise. Also the Rapala count down jerk bait is a good lure to use when bass are suspended. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 23, 2009 Super User Posted April 23, 2009 They catch smallmouths almost as good as the X-Raps! And they are cheap. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 ya....... ive actually caught more than a few bass on a husky jerk!! Quote
carrothead Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 Thanks a lot! I'll have to buy a few. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 You don't hear too much about the Husky Jerk anymore since Rapala came out with the X-rap. IMHO the Husky jerk is a better cold water jerkbait. I caught alot of fish for years and years in cold water on Husky jerks, but had not thrown them much in the last 2 -3 years, I was intent on using the x-rap.............big mistake, my cold water jerkbait success went down (way down according to my fishing records) almost to the point of losing confidence in jerkbaits. Well this year I went back to the Husky jerk and am catching more fish. I guess there is a place for both, for me the Husky jerk=cold water/slow presentations, X-rap= warmer water/faster presentations. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 I love 'em!! One of the most productive baits I own. I have at least 30 of them and best color (for me) is Tennessee Shad. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 Husky Jerks are great jerkbaits for bass. They are a little more subtle than X - Raps and they have a wider wobble than a floating rapala. When bass want less movement, go with the Husky Jerk. When they want it more erratic, go with the X - Rap. I always carry both. Both lures will catch largemouth, smallies, trout, pike, walleye, and even crappie. Quote
Primus Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Try the glass minnow color, unique color that's white with a reflective insert that's real effective at times. Quote
Matt 825 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 They sure do work. This was the first jerkbait that I had really good success with. I have not used then in years though, IMO there are far better jerkbaits on the market now. The main problem with the husky jerkbait is that they do not cast well at all on a baitcaster. Even on a spinning rod you wont get the distance you will get with a pointer. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 24, 2009 Super User Posted April 24, 2009 I've had very good luck with the HJ10 Silver Blue, orange belly: http://www.rapala.com/products/luresdetail.cfm?modelName=husky_jerk&freshorsalt=Fresh 8-) Quote
bunkerbstr Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I agree with these guys, great jerkbait and you gotta love the price. I've owned them for a long time and caught countless fish on them over the years. Nice subtle action and not as erratic as the X-rap or the Pointers. My favorties are: Tenn Shad Silver/black back Gold/black back There is a Crawdad color (Brown/orange belly) that I don't believe they sell anymore that is great too. Quote

That's my go-to size and color for Winter Table Rock Bass. Great lure. The tiny (06 and 08) sizes are fantastic for panfish and trout, too. Quote

FWIW this outfished my X-Rap the last time the jerkbait bite was on. I love the X-Rap (Olvie), but based on the situation I will put this on over my XRaps. Quote
