Big Country Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Just wanted to get on here and say "what's up?" to everyone here. I've been reading through everything on this site for a while now, but just recently decided to sign up to the forum section. This site is great and very informative!! Little bit about myself: I was born and raised in a little town just north of Pittsburgh, Pa called Butler. Dad taught me how to fish when I was about 3, and I've been at it ever since. We never had enough money for a boat, so I've been a shore fisherman my whole life. The main body of water I fished growing up was Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park. Mostly fished for Largemouths, but also went after Hybrids, Catfish, Crappie and Bluegill. Also fished Glade Run for Largemouth, Crappie and Trout. Once I had a drivers license I started venturing out a bit further and eventually made my way to Lake Erie. I became addicted to smallies in the summer and steelhead in the late fall, early winter months and much of my time and energy went to fsihing for mainly the steelhead in the fall/early winter. I now reside in Georgia, right smack dab in the middle of the state in Warner Robins. I still don't have a boat, but have met up with some great friends that do have boats, and really enjoy fishing the various bodies of water found in Georgia. When I'm fishing from shore I spend a good bit of time at a PFA in Bleckley County, Ga, but when I have the chance to go out with friends we mostly fish Lake Oconee, Lake Sinclair and Lake Blackshear. I also work at a Bass Pro shop, on a limited schedule and enjoy the atmosphere of working there. I started in the fishing deparmtent and am now in the hunting department, but my overall passion is for fishing. I feel I'm very well rounded in my fishing abilities, using a wide range of lures and methods, and at times still like to get out there with live bait to see what might come along. And when it comes time to using artificial bait I love throwing a crankbait! I usually start out with a crank, move to a spinnerbait, then throw a jig and pig, hit up some flukes, throw a senko (wacky style), texas or carolina rig a worm or lizard, and just recently started to experiment with drop shotting. I hope to be able to contribute where I can on this site and learn a lot from many of you, and if you're ever in middle Georgia and are looking for a fishing partner just let me know, I'm down for fishing anywhere and for anything. clayf Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I grew up salteater fishing from piers. I never felt the need for a boat until I moved to the mid Ga area. If you can suggest any locations in the area for bass fishing from the shore I would be grateful. Quote
SammyLee Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Welcome Big Country! Ah, the memories of Warner Robins back in the late 60's, playing rock and roll in dive assed bars full of crazy folks. Â I learned not to get too friendly with local girls cause that caused problems with my health. Â Got a sudden onset of bloody nose and black eyes! SammyLee Quote

If you can suggest any locations in the area for bass fishing from the shore I would be grateful. Welcome to my world, lol, as i am in the same boat!!! There are plenty of places to fish, but almost all of them require a boat, and for us that's not a good thing. There is one place I've found that is fishable from shore, but at the same time its a very tough place to fish, and that's the PFA in Bleckley County, GA, just outside of Cochran. It's fairly new and they still have a release only policy for Largemouth's but when you do hook into one it's usually a 6+ lb fish, so the average is very good!! They've implemented a lot of atrificial structure for the fish and left a lot of standing timber in the resevoir so it's definitely a haven for big fish. Other than that the only thing I've done is found a few private ponds and got permission to fish them, plus I have a friend that has a boat, so I really don't go more than 2 weeks or so before getting out on the water. Let me know how you make out. Quote

I myself tried marrying one of the "local girls" but found out a few years down the road that that wasn't the best choice I've ever made and am now learning that the hard way  :-[, but at least I've got plenty of places to fish from to occupy my time!! tnhiker44 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I too live in central Georgia, just twenty or so miles due east of Warner Robins. This is my very first post and find it awesome that there are some local anglers that participate on this board. clayf has mentioned the new Ocmulgee public fishing area and he has nailed the description to a tee. I am quite sure we have been there at the same time (that's me in the white Triton), as it is only ten minutes from the house and so darn convenient. Not a bunch of fish, like Dodge Co. or Hugh McGillis, but there are great big ones in there. I have caught two over ten out of there and the lake is but three years old!! I am pretty sure there are a few fellow board members from above the Mason/Dixon that cannot believe that we are releasing double digit fish! Anyway, it is a pleasure to see fellow local anglers on this board. Oh, and by the way, the new public fishing area just south of Perry is set to open real soon. tight lines, tnhiker44 Quote

I live in Warner Robins so for me the drive isn't too terribly bad, but its when I get there that the fun begins. I'm always trying to locate fish and that requires a ton of walking when there is no boat, lol. I haven't been that way for a few months, how's the bite right now? I was thinking about fishing it sometime during the long weekend, but that will be dependant on the weather  :-? Quote
tnhiker44 Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Big Country, I have to travel up to Tennessee this weekend to attend my daughters graduation (what wingnut thought Memorial Day week-end was a good time for graduation??) but I will be back early Monday... or at least hope to. I will be ready to get out there and wet a line... if you happen to be out there and see a white Triton shout and wave. I will pick you up and give you a spot on the back. The place closes at sunset so barring some difficulties I will certainly be there until then. I think you will get a kick out of the depth changes (i.e. channels, flats, humps, ect.) that they have built into that 108 acre lake. I am sure these rapid depth changes will soon silt over as I am guessing it is all red clay bottom. The last time I was there the water level was up and had cooled down some from my previous visit. The average surface temperature last visit was about 82... down from 88 the time before! Last trip I caught three fish - a 6.4, a 6.2 and a 5.6, all on a magnum trick worm in the watermelon seed color. One rigged wacky style... but the lake has plenty of snags out there so from the bank I would rig them 'normal' (weightless and weedless). But by all means if you see a tall handsome actor looking dude in a white Triton give me a holler. Of course, I ain't tall, ain't handsome and I can't act... but besides that, it will be me in the white, relatively clean, brand new Triton out there. You will also be able to identify me another way... I will be the one catching fish!!!! Quote
J-B Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Welcome from the Atlanta area! I agree, it is nice to see others from the area on here. Hope ya hook up with tnhiker44 and his "white, relatively clean, brand new Triton " (he sure seems proud of that thing don't he ) out there and enjoy a great day of catching some biggins. Quote

I surely appreciate your offer to fish from the back of your boat and in the future wil take you up on it, but I will have my 2 year old son for the holiday weekend so I'll have to pass on the monday fishing. I do hope to go fishing with him though, we'll just hit up a little private pond here in WR, hopefully I can put him on some brim or shad. He doesn't care what's biting as long as it's on the end of his line, lol. And when I do make it out to the PFA I'll be sure to look for that white Triton  Quote
