Livewell additives

Whats your guys preference on the different additives for treating bass in livewells during the summer months?

Be careful with ice. Sometimes there are chemicals in it such as chlorine. If you freeze water in a bottle it is better, but you can hurt the fish with the bottles while running. I suggest not adding ice and just using peroxide and sure life or using surelife in the water before freezing.

Water bottles is how I make the ice and, like you stated, I add sure life to the water before freezing.  This cleans up the tap water and as the ice melts, the product is slowly released.

X3, I hope this doesn't turn into the thread that i got beat up on a couple of years ago about the Hydrogen Proxide. I never just add ice. I freeze bottles and use them instead. That way nothing in the city water gets in on the livewell water.

Any free chlorine in ice will be oxidized by organic material present in lake water.

Doesn't surelife that we got at the roadtrip also help get rid of the chlorine in ice??

Then you are doing a disservice to your fish.

Check your livewell after the fish have been in there a while.  Notice the fish jumping around and being overly active?  That is a bad thing called stress.

The ideal demeanor of a fish is a calm, relaxed state in your livewell.  Sure Life products have a sedative in them to keep the fish from being stressed and decreasing the likelihood of delayed mortality.

I just read in an article that BASS Conservation Director Chris Horton uses non-iodized salt as an additive. He claims that most additives are mostly salt to begin with, and uses 1/3 cup for every 5 gallons of water. I'll stick with the name brands, though I do find what he says interesting.

Just wanted to pass this along.....I have found that if you hook a fish deep or in the gills, if you dump diet 7-up or sprite zero (like 2 ozs.) over the wound, it seems to almost cauterize the wound and they stay healthy and alive.  Just my experience.

Cool thing is you can do that with the Sure Life products too.

Stops the bleeding almost immediately.

Trust me, I hardly ever push product and absolutely never just because they sponsor this site.  This is one that I have found to honestly do what it says, every time.

Mountain Dew does the same thing. I always try the Mountain Dew first (only because its easier) but if that does not work, applying Sure Life Catch N Release right on the wound (with your finger) will take care of it.

I can't tell ya how mad I was at a partner for killing one of my big fish in a tourney. First he used Rejuvenate, then when we had a split weigh in he refused to weigh her because he didn't like the concept of a split weight in (we do this to prevent killing a big fish in summer) and didn't want others to know what we had. We go back out and fish and it freaking hot like 100 degree day hot. I suggest we should put in some ice but oh know these Ranger life wells he has never let fish die blah blah blah. Next thing you know a perfectly healthy 5 pound plus fish is dead. Sure the pound penalty sucked but this was a beautiful female bass that would probably hit close to seven in winter and spring. Now it was dead. So now that got my new boat and built in live well Hydrogen peroxide, Sure Life, and Ice will be close by on hot days.
