jaymc Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Got sick of holing up so I went out to a local spot to through a few lures. I didn't have much luck. After awhole a guy came by on a snowmobile and allowe as to how if I wanted to cast, I might want to cut a bigger hole. Go Ravens Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 16, 2010 Super User Posted January 16, 2010 Uhhh, maybe a flame thrower can help to melt a path through the ice long enough for you to make a cast. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 16, 2010 Super User Posted January 16, 2010 I have 11 lakes that I fish in my area. Nine of them froze up solid about 10 days ago - but the two largest/deepest lakes had some open areas in the ice about the size of swimming pools and I fished those until they finally froze over about 5 days ago. I just bought some new baits and I wanted to "swim" them to check the action. We've had some warm weather here the past few days so I drove around this morning hoping to find a melted spot in the ice big enough to cast into .................. no such luck! Quote
avid Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 Even in Florida the fishing is slow due to the cold. It's warming up a little now, and I'm hearing about some activity but alot of the usual suspects are still dead. Quote
KYbass1276 Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Yeah I read on the news yesterday that floridas govner was asking for the whole state to be declared a disaster for farmers, kinda shoots global warming down in flames I guess. Anyways we still have some hunting seasons in up here I get out and take advantage of small game hunting. Get in some good excercise in the process plus it's nice to just be out. Our lakes here well the ones that I can fish are froze still but not real thick though a few more days of thus warmer weather and they should thaw out. I plan on getting out my tackle bag and rods and reels and blowing the dust off and taking inventory of a few things. After my almost two year break from fishing I'm hoping that it's like riding a bike and I haven't forgot to much. Quote
Buckeye1955 Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Was pretty decent in southeastern Ohio today. Almost 50 and partly sunny for awhile. The local river ramp had alot of trucks and trailers there even though the river still has chunks of ice in it. I need to drive up along the Muskingum river tomorrow a ways anyway and may take a rod and at least throw something! Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 17, 2010 Super User Posted January 17, 2010 I've been surprised. Didn't get cabin fever last winter, or this one. I do get in plenty of fishing during the season, four to six days per week, so I get a pretty good "fix" between March and November. Years ago, when I was lucky to get out twice a week, it was a different matter. The ponds are frozen around here, and ice fishing doesn't appeal to me. Get caught up on things around the house. Looking forward to the races in Daytona. We'll be heading down in three weeks. Then either the third of fourth week in March, I'm going to our younger daughter's place in Temple, GA with a buddy for a week's fishing. Bringing my canoe and will hit some small ponds in her area and plan to spend two or three days on Varner. Should be catching them on jigs around here in early March. April is a pretty good month, then the road trip in May. Enough anticipation to keep the cabin fever in one of the dark corners of my head. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted January 18, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted January 18, 2010 Temps in my area have been about 10 degrees above normal for several weeks now. Global warming? At least in my area it is! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 18, 2010 Super User Posted January 18, 2010 After a couple of weeks of below freezing temps, we're having a warm spell here on the Cumberland plateau in Tennessee. 3 of the 11 lakes that I fish had some water open up today (although they're still mostly frozen over for now) and I fished all 3. I would toss the bait (spoons and spinners) across the open water and onto the ice, then ease the bait off the ice and let it sink deep, then retrieve. Didn't catch a thing but it was good to get out of the house ! Quote
Other. Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I was struck with cabin fever instantly. Happened like last week. One day I was all fine and dandy and then... boom I'm in my house casting a 7 foot rod in a house that only has 8 foot ceilings (using bow and arrow casting style) Quote
Bainza Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Last year was the first year I really got into fishing, and the cabin fever hit yesterday. It was in the mid 50's and my mind went straight to fishing. Too bad all the ponds and lakes are frozen over. Mite try the stream for some trout this week. Well to help it a little I went through all of my gear tonite. Still craving the need to fish though. Quote
bassinbob54 Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I really appreciate liveing in the southeast after reading all the posts about ice and frozen lakes..here we had some real cold weather followed by a nice warming trend which was precipitated by me sending my boat in for some TLC...talk about bad timeing...lol..gotts a little cabin fever here too.. J. M. Richardson Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I recently took up ice fishing, while not a cure-all to cabin fever, and not quite as exciting (or warm) as open water fishing, it's fun trying to wrangle even 2lb largemouths through a hole in the ice with and ultra lite rod thats only 2 ft long Quote

My ice fishing opportunities were pretty good during the cold snap we had the previous weeks but now cabin fever is back upon me. Phooey! Quote
Super User bassfisherjk Posted January 19, 2010 Super User Posted January 19, 2010 In the past couple of weeks I cleaned, and respooled all of my reels.Plus I already have my tackle box sorted and ready to go.I CAN'T TAKE IT!!! Quote
BassNut Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I hear ya..........................I'm in Ct and lakes have been locked up since December!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for Ice out!!! Theres some Big Smallies That I have a score to settle with!!! ;D Quote
zero limit Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 only 58 more days till spring, hang in there Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 21, 2010 Super User Posted January 21, 2010 My lakes here in TN were frozen-over for a couple weeks but we've had some warm weather lately and most of them now have open water with surface water temps of about 44 degrees. I fished yesterday for about 3 hours and it was good to get out of the house. Catching wasn't real good but that will improve as we get closer to spring Quote
tritz18 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Everything is cleaned and ready just waiting for the weather. At the beginning of the winter I was fine but now I am really starting to miss fish. Come on spring! Quote
SlateTundra Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 I picked up ice fishing this year. Nowhere close as exciting as open water, but I'm catching fish and learning new things along the way so it's not that bad. Pulling slab crappies, walleyes, and northerns through an 8" hole is better than sitting home staring at my tackles/gears. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 22, 2010 Super User Posted January 22, 2010 In MA here, everything is pretty well locked up with ice. EXCEPT.....the CT River! Plenty of open water there. A good friend of mine has been hitting smallies and walleye there for a couple of weeks now. The only reason I'm not out there with him, even today, is because I won't be 65 until next month. Then the cost of my "sporting" license goes down to a mere $25.00! And yes, when you're on a fixed income....it does matter! I'll be out there in a few weeks for sure. Everyone can find open water to cure cabin fever if you just look around. Quote
Luke at Gouldsboro Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I'm going crazy, I need to fish. Tonight I'm emptying my tackle boxes and cleaning them. Tomorrow, I'll make a list of what I need, and check hooks on lures and stuff like that. Quote

My ice fishing opportunities were pretty good during the cold snap we had the previous weeks but now cabin fever is back upon me. Phooey! I got a new "Showdown" fish finder made just for ice fishing. I have been having a ball. You can see the ice jig (smaller then a tiny split shot for those unfamiliar) well over 30 feet down. It will separate a fish from the bottom if it's belly just lifts off the bottom. You can see the fish react to your every move. I stayed home this week because the temps have been below zero with wind chills down to -20, but I'll be out next week again. I wish Al Gore would show up around here..., we could use some hot air. : Quote
