For some of you, this may not happen very often but for the rest of us stiffs, it does:  After you've had a rough day on the water (i.e, not caught much) when you get back to the dock/boat ramp, do you want to know how the other fishermen faired?  Maybe I have weak ego strength but I'd rather not know.  There's nothing I hate worse than hearing "Yeah, tore 'em up" or "Not too good-only 20 or 30."  Only when no one else has any good do I want to know how they did.  Okay, if I can learn some new methods/techniques or locations, I'm willing to listen but otherwise, no, I'd rather pass.

Yes, I do like to know how others did. Even if they killed them and I didn't catch a thing. Then I know it was me and not that the bite was just off. I am able to make adjustments and become a better fisherman.

You do have to be careful, though. I know some guys who will just straight up lie. Not a big deal in the scheme of things but it can be misleading.

Dock talk is not to be relied on. If I want or need informantion and cannot figure it out I will go to only a hand full of trusted sources. Otherwise I'm not paying any attention to any of it.

It is my experience that fishermen have a tendency to stretch the truth. ::)

Sometimes you can get to know the regulars and get good reports. You can learn a lot from them. There are some who want to help and are forthcoming with info, some that don't, and others who will make something up just to mess with you. I talk to most folks at the ramp, but take much of what I hear as just talk.

If someone is at the ramp, I'll usually ask how they did, mostly just as a way to shoot the breeze. But I don't give it much thought either way. If I did better, I figure I did something right. If they did better, it just wasn't my day.

Years ago I went to a Bass Techniques seminar and saw Jimmy Houston.  One of his comments was that "All fisherman are born tournament fisherman, once they catch something worth showing off".  He was talking about how people will hang around a landing just waiting for the next guy to show up.

I have to completely agree with that.  Its probably why there's so many posts in the "My Tournament or Outing Page", while I can't even find the part of this forum called "My Livewell's Farting Dust".   ;D

You would have to take their word with a grain of salt because they could be lying through their teeth. You know, there's this part of human nature where we don't like (or prefer not) to have others do better than us and for some reason it stings.

Fortunately I am usually not like that.

I'm with crankenstein. I don't ask for reasons to compare their performance to mine, but I would ask out of curiosity and as a fellow angler.

thats so funny you ask,,,. for you it seems only catching 2 or 3 is an awful day that really eats you up inside. for me it takes a day like i had a couple weeks ago. 6 hours on the water not one bite even. i was thoroughly ticked as well as my buddy. we loaded the boat back up at the same time as another fisherman, who looked way older than us, or if anyone was catching anything, this was the guy.i REALLY didn't wanna ask for the exact same reasons you didnt, but i had to know so i asked him how he did. "caught 8, yall do aight?" i told him not really when i meant not at all. it was like cramming my ego further down the poopshoot with the bottom of his boot.  it hurt. how could this be? do i suck? i'll never find money spots like that. well apparently i needed the humility as motivation cause the next weekend i fished a bunch o new places i hadn't fished yet (plenty of those on a 33,000 acre lake) and caught a 4 and a couple 3's and a few other quality fish. so, it can be a good thing i guess, no pain no gain

But to get back to topic, I always lie at the ramp at first. Sometimes ill come around and tell the truth depending if the guy asking is being a RICHARD or not.Tournaments i'll lie 100% of the time.

IT does not matter if I caught 20 or nothing, If someone asks me how I did I will say, " I caught a couple keepers" or "I caught a few nothing special".

If it is someone I know then I tell them the straight up stretched truth. ;)

I always tell the truth about my fishing exploits . . . . good or bad.  And on occasion, I'll ask someone how they did to make small talk.  Sometimes it can lead to some really good information.  Other times you can tell that, for whatever reason, a person doesn't want to reveal any information about his or her day.  I just change the subject at that point to something that makes them more comfortable.

If someone asks, I always tell the truth, down to baits and pattern. I have had a huge amount of help from others so I figure it's my duty to help someone else. Plus I fish out of a ramp where you can fish nearly 100K acres so it's not likely they will ever get within a half mile of my spots anyway.

I too give good information,I hate a bad day on the water like the next guy.Alot of times they'll say something to the effect....yep,and if their not there go just around the bend and by the cluster of rocks 'bout 30 feet out and throw....I've even exchanged baits with some guys. Some guys are cool that way,I appreciate it.

If I am on fish I'll tell you I am on fish and will give you a few good places to fish. If we are fishing for money you need to do your own homework.
