smallie.huntin Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Is there lightning? If not, I am going fishing. I usually only get one day a week to fish for more than an hour or two, so rain or shine I try and get out there. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Rain is the best time to fish. My biggest fish came during Tropical Storm Fay last year. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Re-arrange your tackle box! Yes indeed, that and cleaning my reels!!! Quote

Dad_Golf_Fish Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Re-arrange your tackle box! Watch fishing shows! Together, those describe yesterday at my house. I almost ended up going out, but it was just a bit to threatening. Now for next weekend I have an organized tackle box and I'm brushed up on techniques to use. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted June 7, 2009 Super User Posted June 7, 2009 -Get the work off my desk (banner spring and summer so far). -Tile the mud room floor. -Get the electric fence back up and running before the bears get the chickens. -Restart bee hives (bears got 'em last year). -Build and install another raised garden bed. -Weedwhip the soccer field. -Replace bathroom sink. -Get the bamboo down in the office (adjoining mud room). -Put a stair case on the lower deck. -Ty-Vec and blow insulation into the windward side of the house. -Build a desk/workspace into my son's bedroom. -Get the transducer bracket mounted onto my float tube (As you see this not at the top of the list). - .... Ooooops! Didn't read the title. Rain? Put on a rain jacket and go fish. Quote
Branuss04 Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Is there lightning? If not, I am going fishing. I usually only get one day a week to fish for more than an hour or two, so rain or shine I try and get out there. There aren't many weather conditions that will keep me off the water. Lighting is one of them though.... I won't mess with that stuff. Other than that I'm on the water rain or shine, that's why they invented rain gear and bilge pumps ;D Quote
SDoolittle Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 As long as there is not any lightning, I'll fish in the rain. Quote
bigtimfish Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 When I have the itch and can't go fishing I usually go in the garage or one of my bigger rooms, set up targets(cups or plant pots) and practice pitchin and flippin. It never hurts to practice accuracy. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Depends, if I'm NOT going out because it's raining, I'd probably scratch it with a 45 magnum to the temple. RAIN TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME!! Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 8, 2009 Super User Posted June 8, 2009 As long as there is not any lightning, I'll fish in the rain. There you go Should I get caught in a rogue flash storm, I just erect a 20 ft pole to serve as a Lightning Rod Roger Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted June 8, 2009 Super User Posted June 8, 2009 I talked with a couple guys years ago who decided to fish through an electrical storm. They told me that as they fished and the cell got close their graphite rods started making pinging sounds. They looked at each other and their hair was starting to frizz -standing up on end. They got the HE!! outta there. They told me they talked to an electrical engineer buddy who told them that, being in a 'glass boat, they had become a giant capacitor. I don't know electricity well so I don't know how good this explanation is, but it's enough to scare the H outta me. I remember fishing at the edge of a huge black cell, watching it and thinking it would miss me. It did. But I read in the paper the next day that a man was watering his garden further from the cell than I, in the sun! And he was struck, blowing his arm off where he held the hose, and killing him in front of his wife. Lightning just isn't worth messin' with. Quote

On more than one occasion I've been caught in an electrical storm, and they were extremely anxious moments. The highest point is generally the most vulnerable, but you can get lucky if the imbalance in protons to electrons is greater in another object, though that object may be slightly lower or slightly farther away than your position. All the same, hoping that the proton count in your boat is balanced with the electron count in an overhead cloud, is a dangerous place to hang your hat! Roger Quote
