hicksie Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I have been fishing for a few years pretty regularly, how ever i am limited and overwhelmed with all the tackle offered to attract large mouth bass,, currently i use lots of rubber worms. Is there some basic type of lures someone could recomend that may increase my chances when they are not biting on the worms? Quote
bigtimfish Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 got 2 tips. for early morn and late evening use a topwater such as a baby torpedo. easy to fish and works awsome. 2 is a spinner bait. my favs are blk/white and white/chrt. both with trailers. fish them slow ticking the top of grass or faster just below the surface making a wake or bulge. good luck. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 12, 2009 Super User Posted May 12, 2009 I agree with adding a couple of top water baits, as well as a spinnerbait or two, to your arsenal. Not sure what kind of "rubber worms" you are referring to, that you already use, but make sure you include some 5" Senkos - fished weightless on 3/0 EWG worm hooks. Quote
BARON49_Northern NY Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 You may want to give a jig a try. My personal favorites are BooYah jigs 1/4 and 1/2 oz in black/blue and green pumpkin. Add a trailer like a Paca craw in the same or opposite colors. These are big fish baits. Quote

IdahoLunkerHunter Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 You can leave the door with four baits in the spring and you will catch fish. 1. 5" stick bait, junebug or watermelon 2. 1/4 oz jig with trailer, pumpkin jig with blue or watermelon trailer 3. Suspending jerkbait, in accordance with your lakes bait fish 4. 4"-5" lizard set up on a S. Carolina rig. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 12, 2009 Super User Posted May 12, 2009 Learning techniques is fun and you have some pretty good advice on lures so I'll only add some thing to keep in mine while learning. If you want increase your consistency learn your lake's structureyou can't catch what you can't find. I've found that when I'm not catching it's usually location not lure Quote
GA basss boy Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 i have a lure that works great for me anywhere i go really. its the medium diving, strike king pro model series 1 and 4s crankbait, specifically sexy sunfish color. depending on where you are fishing and how you want to, there are various ways you can fish it. Dalton Tam Posted May 24, 2009 Posted May 24, 2009 Humdinger or H&H spinnerbait(White and chart.), Pearl with black back BANDIT crankbait, Zoom watermelon purple babybrush hog, Black and blue buzzbait in the mornings and evenings, Tiny torpedo topwater bait, Bulldog Head Jig (black and blue on cloudy days and pumpkin on sunny days or in grass), and a Red Shad 8" culprit worm. You will catch more fish than you can deal with. Quote

Is there some basic type of lures someone could recomend that may increase my chances when they are not biting on the worms? It's important to try new baits to broaden you horizons and make you versatile. Over half of professional tournaments are won with hard baits (jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits), and building confidence in these lures will make you a more successful angler. I can recommend a few 'no fail' hardbaits that easily get bit. The Lucky Craft Moonsault CB-100 is simply a 'no-fail' crankbait. I had my best friend (whom doesn't fish) throw this crank on a spinning rod and he tore it up. For spinnerbaits; throw a finesse spinnerbait to get frequent bites; the more bites you get the more confidence you build. The War Eagle finesse spinnerbait in 5/16oz is extremely reliable. The same goes for a jig. Smaller finesse jigs get bit when others don't. Just fish the jig like you do your worm and you will be good to go. For jerkbaits...a pointer 78 is a guarantee. Good luck....
