Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Guys, I remember a few years back, I was reading something about retail sales totals being ranked by sport/hobby. It was either a list or an article, I don't remember but Golf was #1 and Fishing was #2 but had the higher growth rate. Can anyone find me any info pertaining to this? I'd like to see it in print. It may have changed by now as well, could be in a huge slump for all I know. Basically looking for what sport/hobby has the greatest retail sales and then #2,3,4 etc Thanks in advance Quote
Guest muddy Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Hey Russ: I tried these 2 searches; Stats: Market Share and growth potential for outdoor sports equipment Stats: Retail market share and growth potential for fishing equipment Problem; At Least on Google: there is a two year lag in the info I will try from work on my College E Library Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 1, 2007 Super User Posted December 1, 2007 I swear I make my best effort to keep it in # 2. Quote

Super User Tin Posted December 1, 2007 Super User Posted December 1, 2007 Russ, I remember seeing this info a while back in a Bassmaster Magazine. I want to say it was about 6 months back but it was the same data, Golf #1, Fishing #2 but a higher growth rate. Quote
HesterIsGod Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I could be wrong on this one but I could of sworn that participation in fishing was declining. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Yes, but then Redlinerobert came into the game and retail-wise, made up for the folks that quit, lol Looking for "retail sales" stats more than participation stats (although you would think they can go hand in hand) Quote
JT Bagwell Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Judging by what I was able to locate in my 5 minutes of searching, they must not do that survey every year. A lot of sources only had the statistics for 2001. Here is that information on the Illinois site. http://dnr.state.il.us/fish/fishfacts.htm JT Bagwell Quote
Guest muddy Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Hey Russ the most recent info in the College E Source was pretty much the same. You may have to contact a professional Mkt.analysis firm to get anything current, sorry I tried. Quote

I am taking a WFS class and my teacher is a really well known in the wildlife community. He gave us all sorts of statistics from 2006. Anglers spent 75.4 billion Some of the angling fees below. License, permits, fees 644,931,000 Ice 378,763,000 Bait 1,179,018,000 Hooks, sinkers, swivels 399,525,000 This statement below shows the amount of fishermen for 2006. The dollar value is the average amount of money spent in a year per angler. Anglers 25.4 Mil. $1,357 Per Person Last 5 years 12% drop in anglers Quote

RobbyZ5001 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Tin2Win Anglers 25.4 Mil. $1,357 Per Person Last 5 years 12% drop in anglers I think the Anglers 25.4 million or avg of $1357 / person is for 2006. I think from 2001-2006 there has been a 12% drop in anglers. He didn't give me any of the older spending statistics. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 3, 2007 Super User Posted December 3, 2007 Ok found it, Bassmaster Times summer of 06-cant remember which month Bass fishing has a highest growth rate in retail sales, golf is first. So since the amount of anglers is dropping and the rate of retail sales is growing=Baitmonkey is happy because we are just spending more money. Depressing a 12% drop in anglers :'( Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Yeh I dont understand it. There is a 12% drop yet in my mind the sport is growing under the national eye. It's on TV more then ever and it seems that the sportis gaining respect. Quote

Has anyone else heard about fishing be one of the most deadliest sports? i know its off topic but i cant rember if i heard it right or not The show manswers on spiketv says that fishing is the #1 most deadliest sport in North America because of boating accidents related if I remember correctly. The show is pretty entertaining although I get an occasional slap behind the head from my girlfriend while watching it. They often have hot girls dress in bikini to conduct experiments. I will then have to tell her its for educational purposes only : Quote
JT Bagwell Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 I almost bet they are referring to "Commercial Fishing" and not the type of fishing that most of us do. The guys you see on tv on that deadliest catch show or whatever it is called. Now that is some dangerous fishing. JT Bagwell Quote
Redsyn Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 No, they included weekend anglers because sometimes they fall overboard and can't get back on the boat and then result in hypothermia. Quote
frogtog Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 I don't even try to keep up with what I spend in a year on fishing ( It's embarrassing ) But I know I help keep America going and the oil people too. Hey thats an idea, we could trade Baits for Oil. Quote
