bugman Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I have always replaced treble hooks with Gamme round bend. I see a lot of EWG treble hooks or the type with one EWG hook and the other two round bend on the market and was would like to know if anyone likes them better. Also do you use colored hooks such as red or chart/green? Quote
CJ Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I use the EWG Gammy treble hooks. They work great! Quote
bugman Posted February 4, 2007 Author Posted February 4, 2007 I think I will try some on a few of my lipless cranks to see if it helps reduce the amount of fish that shake off. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 4, 2007 Super User Posted February 4, 2007 Owner St-36 or St-41 are the best! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 4, 2007 Super User Posted February 4, 2007 I've used gammies extra wide . This year I'm going to try some VMC Barbarian. Quote
Guest avid Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I use the owners, basically because Owners are hook of choice in all situations. There may be a better one out there, but owners are so well made, and have worked so consistantly well for me over the years that "if it ain't broke don't fix it" good luck and have fun. Quote
justfishin Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I like Excalibers for treble hooks. www.***.com/descpage-ERTREB.html Quote
VAbacklash Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Excalibers are my favorite. I replace the trebles on my Traps with them and haven't had a fish throw the lure back at me. They can scratch the finish off your lures. Just adds character. Quote
NEBassMan Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I also use Owner replacement trebles on my baits that have inferior hooks. If they come with decent hooks, like VMC or Gamakatsu, i leave them until they are dull, then switch them to Owner. Jason Quote
Super User Munkin Posted February 4, 2007 Super User Posted February 4, 2007 Daiichi death traps I believe these are what come factory on LC baits. Allen Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 4, 2007 Super User Posted February 4, 2007 LC uses VMC hooks. Quote
dink Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Gammy EWG and round bends as well as Excalibur Tx3's. Quote
The_Natural Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 LC uses VMC hooks. ...and Daiichis (on the Slender Pointers). I use the Daiichi 4x trebles, and have found that the 4x trebles hold a point longer due to their thicker gauge wire. I purchase them in 100pks, and this saves me a ton of money versus spending 5 or $6 on an 8pk. Quote
HOPTOAD Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I recently replaced mine with Mustad Ultra Point. This is the first time I have ever replaced trebles and I haven't had a chance to use them yet. They were the only replacement trebles I could find in Gander that day. They seem pretty darn sharp though, anyone ever used them? Quote
Supermat Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I'm definetely a fan of the owner 2x hooks! The only exception is on really light weight baits like blade baits, then I'll go with the Gammi EWG, problem is that if its not a 2x or 4x you really need to slow play your fish to keep them from bending out. Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 I like the Excalibur TX3's, I've had good luck with them. Falcon Quote
Infidel. Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I like the Mustad Triple Grip and Owners. The Gamakatsu straighten out on me a lot. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 They straighten out on you when you have a fish on ? Quote
Infidel. Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Yeah, on the wide gap, not the round bend. And it was not like I was using braid either. I was only throwing 12 and 15lb mono. Quote
Supermat Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 That Gamakatsu Round bend is a very weak hook but is also quite stealthy so it still gets used at times. I've bent it out all the way up into the 1/0 and 2/0 sizes! I've also bent out some of the Owner 1/0 and 2/0 hooks but so far the 2x Owner has treated me well. Never had a problem with the Gammi or Owner 4x hooks. Matt Quote
Fish Chris Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 but in 06' I finally made the switch over to using "nothing but Owners". I feel that Gamakatsu's quality control has fallen way off in the last few years. The sharpness had become inconsistent, and the tempering seemed to vary from one hook to the next. Weak points too. Owner ST-36's are absolutely SICK for larger swimbaits ! If you use a smaller lure (that requires a smaller treble) but on fairly stout gear, you might go with the thicker wired Owner ST-41's. IMPO, Owners are the best hooks made at the time being, by anyone, at any price....... But no loyalty here..... As soon as somebody starts making a better hook, I'll switch straight to it, and I won't ever look back. Peace, Fish Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I really like the mustad triple grips. I did get some baits with daichii hooks and those might replace my triple grips. I will have to do more testing. I know there are sharper hooks out there other then triple grips but I just dont lose fish on them. Quote
lovecranking Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I'm withrw, I use the Lucky Craft VMC's. I also replace some of the rear trebles with red Lucky Craft replacement trebles. The LC VMC's stay sharp for a long time. Quote
