steezy Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I not only caught a fish early this morning, I also caught a mallard duck in the air flying low over the water. The ducks came flying over just as I cast my fishing lure and I hooked one of the ducks in the wing. He kept flying and emptied the spool on my fishing reel of 100 yards of line and then it pulled loose from the ducks wing. I was fishing with a steez combo and if I had let go the duck would have flown away with a 9 oz $800 combo. One of the wildest experiences of my life. Quote
swilly78 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 LOL, been there budy, I had to fight the duck into shore and release him though. It wasnt real bad, cause he landed after wrapping his wing, so i fought him swimming instead of flying. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 crazy when stuff like that happens, huh?! ...once, when i was younger, i was fishing at the everglades holliday park with a very basic setup: "kiddie" style combo bobber and the bait was live earthworms.. cast out as usual, and a mocking bird swooped down to eat my earthworm in mid-cast... it was subsequently hooked in the rib cage... i reeled it in, and as i was very young, my father was the one to subdue the bird and unhook it... something i will never forget nonetheless ;D Quote
b.Lee Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Caught a seagull once, I throw a rapala floating minnow and I think if I remember correctly backlashed and I was picking it out and then it swooped and grabbed it. I immediately cut the line and had to drag it in, that sucker wanted my fingers. But I got it off of him. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted November 3, 2009 Super User Posted November 3, 2009 dude, seriously? I wasn't convinced before but now I am. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 3, 2009 Super User Posted November 3, 2009 I'll bet you were sweating bullets. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted November 3, 2009 Super User Posted November 3, 2009 May I suggest a cheaper, heavier combo for duck fishing next time..... Quote
steezy Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 I'll bet you were sweating bullets. At first it was funny watching the line run off the spool so fast but then I realized it was going to end and I might lose the gear. In the end I only lost a $4 rat-L-trap and $3 worth of line. Quote
steezy Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 May I suggest a cheaper, heavier combo for duck fishing next time..... I agree, lower cost and more weight for duck fishing. My wife now refers to that combo as my "duck rod". Quote
L a r r y Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Dont you just hate those pesky lil critters Quote
Big Mike in Fl Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Dont you just hate those pesky lil critters I don't, on slow days thats how i practice my casting accuracy. of course, my gear is about 1/4 the price of his steez combo, but i wouldn't let a duck fly off with mine either. Quote
Bigs Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I would have loved to been out on the water when a duck flying overhead dropped an 800 dollar combo on my boat ;D good thing you got it back. Hope the duck is fine, guess we'll never know. If I see a duck fly by with a rattle trap stuck in it's wing then I'll wait to cast till its far far away Quote
steezy Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 The rat-L-trap came loose and is in the top of a tree, it is a silver one so I can see it clearly. Quote
Brute Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Those ducks are easy to handle when you hook them. You ought to try removing a hook from an alligator. Talk about a top water bite. ;D Brute Quote
paul. Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 first few times i read through this, it quacked me up. but now your story is old and i just don't give a duck anymore. seriously man, glad you got to keep your rig. i know you'd be sick if you lost it. glad you got a fish too. Quote
