Mrs. Matstone Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 I have not been able to fish as much as I would have liked to lately but I finally had the opportunity to go with my husband and a friend of ours on a trip down the river the this past week. They usually try to get together at least once during the summer when their time and work schedules agree with each other. This time I was thrilled to finally be able to come along. We had the opportunity to hit several different spots, some of them being some of my favorite spots that I have not been able to get to in a while so I was really thrilled. Water was still pretty high and the water temps were a little cool for August at 72 degrees. The day was mostly cloudy and being that it was midweek there was not a lot of traffic on the water which was great. Between the three of us we used a variety of different plastics. (tubes, worms, eeliminator, lizards, creatures and as always I had my trusty hawg sauce too....) ;D I spent a lot of my time trying out and trying to get a feel for some of the new Rage tail stuff that I recently stole from my husband. ;D First one that I spent some time with was the eeliminator. Two main reasons for this. One of them was to get a better feel for this bait and second I was hoping to get my first smallmouth on a topwater, which is my favorite way to fish the eeliminator. The eeliminator definitely worked well on the river. I started off casting it at a 45* angle from the boat and it would swim across the top of the water all the way back. It had amazing action. All you had to do was stand there and hold your rod because the current did the rest. You could control the depth by slightly moving the tip of your rod or speed of retrieve but I preferred to let it do its own thing. I did also fish it sub-surface as well and that worked just fine too. Another thing I did was play with the thumper worm a bit today too. What I did with it was to cut it short, about 3 inches. Used the cut tail and rigged it on a jighead. This worked well and landed me some fish too. The cool thing about doing this was that after I did this it I still had the other portion of the bait that I did not use and I could use that as a senko. It was like having 2 baits in one. Cool. The fishing was tough but all in all it was a good day on the water. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. We managed 64 fish in all. 59 smallies, 2 walleye and 3 panfish. I got both of the walleye which was a very cool treat for me and my first topwater smallmouth too. At least I accomplished what I set out to do. I hope you guys have had more time to fish than I have lately. Good fishing to all of you. Quote
Shimmer Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Very cool, congrats on the nice outing. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 Wow, you guys really whooped the smallies! When living in Jersey we often fished around Manunka Chunk and also near the Gap. But I can't say that we ever boated 59 smallies in one day, that's really hammering them! It always nice to see a couple walleyes too, and maybe one day you'll tie into a Delaware River muskellunge Roger Quote
Super User grimlin Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 Looks like you guys had a blast! Making any walleye dinners? Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 Very nice day. I LOVED stream smallie fishing. Something I could retire on. I used to catch some nice smallies in the Delaware on fly tackle, in between trout bouts. Don't have 'em here in CO though. Quote
Mrs. Matstone Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 Thanks guys we had alot of fun and it was great to be on a boat that could cover some distance, unlike my little boat. ;D I hope to hit the susky with Matt and Chris in the fall as well. Should be some very good smallie fishing up there too. Rolo I got a muskiee one time before on the Delaware but he was just a teenager. I definitely would like to get a bigger though. ;D Paul I love stream fishing as well. I have never done it with fly tackle though. It is beautiful to see people fly fish but I am not that coordinated. lol ;D Quote
avid Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Great day Mrs. M.!!! I fished that area of the delaware river once. It was in the middle of a dry summer. The river was low so the smallies were stacked in the holes. It was wild fun. Did you cook a shore lunch? Quote

It has some nice deep water right there and I always love fishing all around the little islands. It can be a blast too. No time for a shore lunch though. ;D Sounds like a fun trip. Mmmmmm...walleye! Glenn so many people have told me now that walleye are good eating. I have never had it but probably should give it a try in the future. Quote
