airborne_angler Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Local Bookstore has the 2011 Spring BPS catalog for sale for $5.00. I can go to the BPS website and order the exact same catalog and it wont cost me a dime. How does this bookstore justify selling this for $5.00 when its actually free directly from BPS ? Quote
BassThumb Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 This ailing economy has been really hard on bookstores. They're closing left and right, and library use is booming. Failing stores can do some odd things. That's the only way I can get my head around it. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 maybe if someone was in need of it right now.. or maybe some people don't know that you can get them online or just dont feel like waiting.. Quote
airborne_angler Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 Well Im one of those that bought the catalog for $5 last year before I found out I could get it free from the website. Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 My local grocery store does the same thing with Cabela's catalogs. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 2, 2011 Super User Posted February 2, 2011 they have been sold at grocery stores/ newstands for many many years Quote

You should expect things in that store to cost you something. If anybody decides to pay $5 for a copy, it must have been easier than waiting for a free one. Quote

powerman970 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 They cost $5 at Bass Pro Shops too if you get one in the store. Of course if you are a regular customer they automatically send you one so no worries. If you have not ordered enough to automatically be sent a free one, they probably should charge you $5 for one anyways. : Quote
Nick Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 At least you had a choice. My subdivision jacked the assessment $400 last year to fight a retail development up the street, and of course, we lost. Quote
joshuaryan Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Got mine in the mail a couple of weeks ago for free Quote

Super User islandbass Posted February 3, 2011 Super User Posted February 3, 2011 I have seen the BPS catalogs in local bookstores in my area for years. I don't think that this is anything new. A fool and his money are soon parted anyway. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted February 3, 2011 Super User Posted February 3, 2011 ill add, i enjoy getting out the BPS catalogs from years gone bye, just to see what was the thing to have in 1984. once in a while my wife threatens to toss them in the trash...then i bring up that beanie baby collection. Nova Kaw 650 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Free enterprise. Don't buy it if you don't want it. Quote
Intrepid Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 ive worked in printing and i imagine it costs a lot of money to print those catalogs. they have to recoup some of the money atleast. i dont see the problem with selling them in stores at all even if you can get one free. it all depends if you want to wait for them to send you one or pay for it and get it now. plus not everyone uses computers/the internet(even in this age). some people are just really weary about entering anything personal about them online. and im sure other reasons. its a way to get the catalog in their hands as well. there is also the cost of shipping them out to these various stores that sell them. dulouz Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 This is a little off subject, sort of. I have bought several of those really nice hard cover fishing books put out by the NAFC at a used book store for $7 each. Much cheaper than what NAFC sells them for. Quote

fishermantony Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I started calling BPS and having the catalog shipped to me when I was 11 or 12, I used to dream about what tackle I wanted and wonder how I was ever going to get it. I would even put the thing in my back pack and bring it to school. That thing coming in the mail was a BIG day for me! Sorry, I know it's off the subject somewhat, but the topic reminded me of those nice memories. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 3, 2011 Super User Posted February 3, 2011 I'm surprised you didnt buy it and then post a thread asking if anyone else had purchased one and whether or not they thought it was a good buy. ;D Quote
