For instance, knives often have a very, very low mark-up. Sometimes when they go on sale the company is actually losing money. Sometimes stores are willing to take a loss on an item in order to get a customer into the store in hopes they will buy other items. Well it doesn't cost anywhere near $599 to make a tv. I wouldn't generally assumed from retail, they are making ton of money. Because lot of time the product goes from suppliers, manufacturer, wholesaler, to retailers. That how many times the price must change at each of those stops along the way charge in mark up for a profit. This is just the simple version, there are many other complex scenarios involved in price changes. Online selling can be cheaper because companies axe the middleman (wholesaler) and price of employees to run the store. Even if the store doesn't purchase the goods or pay the manufacture until the product is sold, they could still be selling the product at a loss in hope they sell enough of it and other products to cover it. (like Dan said) The contribution margin for manufacture is probably lower than you think it is. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't expect it to be 50% or higher. Quote

Manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are in business is to make money. Most people have no idea of what margins really are, not to mention the expenses that go with the operation of any business. In many cases the actual manufacturing cost of a product is fairly low compared to the retail MSRP. Using the greed philosophy, my next significant purchase I'm going to make them an offer, I'll take it for free just to help them clear floor space.....lol, maybe I can get a Bentley convertible for 50k or less. Went back on Saturday with my wife to get some gifts for family and friends and we had a good time. First time I have ever gone out on Black Friday and the prices were outstanding. You have to get into the mood to go out and fight the crowds but it can be fun. Quote

The profit is in the accesories, extended warranty, etc. Never buy the extended warranty. Quote

I would have agreed with you last year but after being in retail for 6 months now I can see that there are certain products where extended warranties are worthwhile, at least depending on the warranty offered by the retailer. One example from where I work is shoes. You can get a warranty on shoes that will include replacement within a year. I usually wear through shoes in less than a year so free replacement is worth the extra dough. Other instances include coverage on items that don't include manufacturer's warranties or items that have manufacturer's warranties that DON'T include normal wear and tear. Quote

I should have elaborated more. My brother, the electronic geek/ tech of the family, says that generally if electronic items are going to fail, they usually do it within months of purchase, which is well within the usual 1 year warranty.
