llPa1nll Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Ok, I hope we can discuss this without getting into any much political debate. I first saw this and was pretty disappointed with the whole thing. What are your thoughts? Read the story here and more fallout reported here. A handful of California students got an unexpected lesson at their high school this week: Don't wear your stars and stripes on Cinco de Mayo. Five Morgan Hill, California students were asked to take off their American flag bandannas and turn their T-shirts inside out after students complained, according to NBC news. Super User grimlin Posted May 7, 2010 Super User Posted May 7, 2010 Here's another one sent to me by my brother. They hung the America flag upside down. Montebello High School in California You will not see this heart-stopping photo on the front page of the NY Times, nor on the lead story of the major news networks. The protesters at Montebello High School took the American flag off the school's flag pole and hung it upside down while putting up the Mexican flag over it. (*See pictures below*) I won't show the pictures on here guys....I felt it was just too much of a disrespect to our fellows serving our country who browses this board. Quote

Super User Root beer Posted May 7, 2010 Super User Posted May 7, 2010 Whoa, what? I mean, I don't mind students celebrating their country's holiday here in America or showing their country's pride. However, I do not see any reason for me to not wear American flag apparel. If I wear an American flag t-shirt, this Hispanic man next to me got a Mexican flag, cool. It doesn't mean I have to turn my shirt inside out. Since that seems be the principle ideology, I pronounce on Forth of July all non-Americans cannot wear, nor show the pride of the country in which they are from. Quote

CanalStalkin Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 This happened not too far from me. It makes me sick stuff like this happens. I didn't know about the upside down flag. I wont even express how it makes me feel because I am sure I'd be banned. Quote

moby bass Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Actually, flying the American flag upside down signals distress. However, flying ANY flag above ours, in this country, is a big no-no. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 8, 2010 Super User Posted May 8, 2010 Morgan Hill is the next town over from me. I'm still shaking my head over this. I mean, you move to a different country, and although is ok to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, most people (including Mexicans) don't know what they are even celebrating! Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independance Day, Sept 16 is. I read that some of the latin students were 'offended' that these kids wore an American Flag that day. I'll bet you didnt know that the kids in question who wore the flag were also of Mexican decent! It just goes to show that the ignorance of some of these kids is unlimited. You move to a country thatgives you opportunities. You are essentially a GUEST. Act like one!! : Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 9, 2010 Super User Posted May 9, 2010 Just another sign of the downfall of our great nation.... We are beginning to be NOT welcome in our own country and nobody seems alarmed??????? :-/ :-/ :-/ I dare say that this signals downfall of American society. This is just an instance of stupidity- not symbolic of America in general. What made this country great in the first place was the influx of immigrants wanting a new life with new freedoms & opportunities, most of us are descendants of them. I'm not sure when the timeline changed, but in pre & post WW2 an immigrant needed sponsorship, a job and residence, then 7 years to stand for citizenship, the proudest day of my father in law"s life after being liberated from the holocaust These modern problems in my opinion stem from American business wanting cheaper labor. In my community of Delray Beach which is a farming community, housing shacks for migrants have been here for decades. I won't touch the political aspect, only to say this problem isn't new, goes way back in time. Quote
GLADES Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 All I can say is that I have the stars and stripes on my truck and my boat and I still get goose bumps when I hear the national anthem played. When these types of incidents occur, IMHO,they have to be challenged peacefully and lawfully and brought under a media spot light. Quote
Super User CWB Posted May 9, 2010 Super User Posted May 9, 2010 I know if I said what I thought, it would be deleted in a second so I won't even bother. If things are so terrible here, stay where you are! How many other countries give you your not only your drivers license test but also your citizen's exam in your foreign language? Quote
Stiller Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Immigrants aren't guests. They're full-fledged citizens with all the right and responsibilities of someone born here. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 10, 2010 Super User Posted May 10, 2010 If you are born in the States you are not an inmigrant you are a citizen so behave like one regardless of where your ancestry is from. If you are not born in the States but by law you can be a citizen and live in in the States then be a citizen. Now, if you are an inmigrant ( resident alien ) you are the prospect of a citizen until you become one, behave like if you were a citizen. Robert does have a point, lot of people don 't know why 5 de Mayo is a celebration, BTW, did you know that General Ignacio Zaragoza the hero of the battle of Puebla ( 5 de Mayo ) was a Texano ? ( was born in what now is the City of Goliad, Texas ), unfortunately he died of typhoid fever a few months later, as result of loosing a commander of that quality the Mexican army was defeated by the French army a year later. Shameful behavaior if you ask me. Quote
