Culture Shock

So the girl and I headed to New York City and Hofstra for the weekend. I have been there a few times and she went to Hofstra University down there last year. What a place during Christmas time. Had to rely on the subways and taxi's because I still can hardly walk but it was still a good time. Got some sympathy for it afterwards anyway. I'm easily annoyed and such but if anyone ever gets the chance to go for a day or two (any more than that maybe too much), go. I have been to most big U.S. cities and this place is just something else. It truly is a different world.

As for Hofstra, WOW. The money involved there is just sick. There is no such thing as a poor college student there. The freshman parking lot was loaded with Mercedes, Lexus SUV's, and Hummers, just crazy. The building and such were pretty amazing as well. A beautiful campus, but you cannot even walk on the lawn on the sides of the walkways. You do and you get in trouble.

Also something down there reminded me of the "Happy Holidays" thread. Go to the malls on Long Island and there are 4 Menorah's to every one Christmas tree. Quite interesting

I can't stand New York City. I could never ever live there. It's a good time I guess, but I need some grass and trees and ponds - more of those than of buildings and crowds.

Last time I was there was for a friend's bachelor party. I actually paid twenty dollars for a pack of smokes. To be fair, it was in a gentlemen's club, but still. Ten dollar drinks. Can't even imagine what Lucky Crafts cost there

Yup, prepare to spend some money on food. A burger at the ESPNZone place will cost you a bunch. But it was the thickest burger I have ever ate. I just wish they would go over to B&J instead of that Hagen-Daz crap. There are Hagen-Daz every 10 feet.

 You didnt come to Brooklyn, a whole other world of really cool neighborhoods, each with their own personality.

 As Far as Manhattan: Gretest Jazz clubs in the world, The Met,Lincoln Center,The Beacon Theater, Broadway and many more musems. You go to a gentelmens club you know you are getting   one way or another

I will say that there is a very high percentage of beautiful women in that city. And I'm talking in the streets and bars and restaurants - not just in the aforementioned clubs...although the same phenomenon applies there.

The condition you refer to is called SANITY.

I like visiting NYC... and driving in Manhattan is a real hoot.  You have to turn into a driving animal if you want to get anywhere.  (I like it better though when I leave.)

OK I accept the fact that this has turned into a country boy trashing the big  city thread. I know it is upsetting to you fellas that there is no place to park your horses and yaks in front of the Copa Cabana!

Leaving can be the worst part. We got stuck on the Throg's Neck for a while and the traffic in southwest Connecticut was awful.

The only thing I did't like were some real crazies down there that hang in the subway stations, pretty scary. Penn Station also smells like a sewage treatment facility.

Many years ago while in New York City on business, I pulled the classic

tourist blunder. Caught a cab on a red light and after a few minutes

got dropped off across the intersection. I don't recall the actual bill,

but I gave the cabbie a 5 and just laughed at myself!

Just keep a lookout for a taxi license plate with the cab medallion number 7N78 (the number is also plastered all over the cash cab, including the light on top of the cab).

You're right Muddy. Although there are some places much better than others. I grew up in Miami, FL, whose women are just ridiculous-looking. And I mean that in the best sense. Moved to CT before high school. Huge drop, but liveable. Went to college in NH at a school where the females are notoriously not-awesome-looking -- another large drop. Now I'm back in CT, and in a few years back down to FL. I think after that maybe Brazil or Argentina?  ;D

Actually, I heard that Minnesota women can be absolutely gorgeous. Can any Minnesotans attest?

I went to Mardi Gras when I was about 10. What were my parents thinking?  ;D I don't remember the girls' beauty so much, but I do remember some boobs I mean things.
