Super User Sam Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Dave, If it was a guy I could understand how he was steering the vehicle. But a lady? That is very dangerous. Welcome to the most dangerous place in the world - a United States interstate highway. More dangerous than serving our great country in a war zone. This is why you need to practice defensive driving and let the fools go past you or you go past them. What kills me is seeing the small vehicles driving next to a tractor-trailer rig on an interstate. Let's see....4,000 to 6,000 pounds vs. 70,000 pounds. Guess who is going to win that contest? And at 75 miles per hour, too. Be safe as we need you to pay a lot of F.I.C.A. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 What a coincidence! That same lady got rearended today and she SCREAMED HER HANDS OFF Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Tin, Any highway around a population area is called a beltway. They are marked with an even number such as I-295 or I-695, etc. Interstates leading into population areas have uneven first numbers, such as I-395 or I-195. Interstates covering a large expanse of land have even numbers for east-west bound roads and uneven numbers for north-south roadways such as I-66 or I-10 and I-95 and I-83. In Rhode Island you have I-295 going around Providence and I-195 going into Providence. I-95 goes through Providence as the main highway. There is really not a beltway around Providence unless you take I-95 north to I-295 to I-95 south. Haven't you heard of the "Beltway Mentality"? This means our congressmen and Senators thinking for themselves and not for the good of all citizens. Come on down south for a spell and do some good fishing, eat some great food and see all the pretty girls. Quote
daviscw Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 As my father says repeatedly, "BE A DEFENSIVE DRIVER". Quote
Super User grimlin Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Ain't safe at all. That's how i feel about people on cell phones driving too. My work has actually banned cell phone usage while in plant.I've actually almost seen somebody get hit while the drivers are talking on cell phones. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 The Washington beltway is ridiculous. I used to work down in Springfield and would have to take I-495 to get there. I got stuck behind a guy going 45mph in the Springfield "mixing bowl" (I was going the opposite way from rush hour traffic so traffic was flowing at about 65mph) on that big looping ramp exit from 95 to 495 Tyson's corner. I think that was more dangerous than a guy doing 90. The people are just stupid, plain and simple. We have terrible drivers in the DC metro area. Quote
Super User Tin Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Thanks Sam O yes, Hookem. Your mom does come to me with all of her issues. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I'd have to look it up but what most of you are describing as "beltways" are called "bypasses". IE they "bypass" the inner art of a city and go around it. Perhaps they are one in the same? FFI - AKA Matt Crum Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 As per Merriam-Webster Beltway: a highway skirting an urban area Bypass: a deflected route usually around a town Quote
atx_newbie Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Sam explained it right. All interstate highways have 2 number names, as in I-20, I-35, I-90. Shorter interstate highways that serve a singular purpose have 3 number names, and the first number of the name determines what that stretch of highway does: an even first number means that it is a bypass/beltway/whatever your area calls it that goes around a city, and if it is odd then it is a spur into the city. For example, driving west on IH-94 towards Chicago you have a choice--stay on 94 and go through Chicago, or take IH-294 for a short period and skirt the city and theoretically miss the traffic. Or, if you are driving into Baton Rouge, IH-10 will take you through one part of the city, or you can take the IH-110 spur to go into the northern part of the city that is not serviced by IH-10. On a side note, Austin, TX is the largest city in the U.S. to not have an interstate bypass. This means that IH-35 is a parking lot for the 20 miles or so around Austin, 24/7. There is no rush hour. It's just always packed because all traffic is forced to go straight through downtown. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Form my touring days, there are beltways around: Atlanta,Wash DC,New York( called the Belt Pwy System),Austin, and Chicago. I am sure there are more, when we played and visited these cities the people refered to them as Beltways. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 I've seen people driving while they are reading a book , shaving , doing make up. People are the dumbest creatures God ever created. Quote

E/W, maybe, but there really isn't any E/W traffic here. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 13, 2008 Super User Posted October 13, 2008 Never mind I googled it Mo-Pac to 183, called the LOOP Quote
atx_newbie Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Yeah you've got a point, that is a second N/S thoroughfare. The problem, though, is that it never connects to IH-35, so it doesn't alleviate any traffic issues on 35. Quote
