fish-fighting-illini Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I was just courious on how fast you drive on residential streets. I'm talking about the kind of streets where 10 houses to a block on both sides not a lot of room and where kids could be around or dart out at any time. I think the speed limit is 25 which seems way too fast. I can't tell for sure but it seems like a of people drive way to fast on our fairly short street. I never want to hit anyone no less a child so I try to drive by their houses at a speed that I would want them to drive by my house. On small routine neighborhood short streets I'm probably driving closer to 20mph How fast do you drive on a similar street. Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 The limit, but if I have the boat on back, A LOT slower. We have to watch for deer more than kids. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 The limit or slower, depending on potential problems. Quote
Fishin-Psyantist Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 The limit or slower for me too. Duno if I could stomach plowing over somebodys kid. I dont want to find out either. Id prefer not to have any involuntary man-slaughter charges on my record. Im very cautious with my driving habbits when other people are around. Doing a couple of donuts on an abandoned icy parking lot it hard to resist though. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 The limit or slower when i see kids. That's 15 MPH in our park. Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 I live in the country so its 5 mph over the limit cruise control locked; when in town I still do the same but I avoid roads with heavy traffic so it very easy to see anyone near the road from a distance. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 13, 2008 Super User Posted January 13, 2008 I am a very careful driver. That being said I was injured by a driver that ran a redlight last night returning from the lake. Truck is messed up thankfully the boat was not scratched. It is still up in the air as to whether the driver is going to be charged with DUI. He was removed from the scene in a patrol car though. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 14, 2008 Super User Posted January 14, 2008 I the city, I go the speed limits as much as possible. On the interstates I go no more than five (5) miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Sometimes in the city on the major arteries I will go five (5) miles above the speed limit. As long as you go with the flow you should be OK. It is the weaving and changing lanes and going more than seven (7) miles over the posted speed limit that the Virignia State Troopers will pull you over. Quote
Jake P Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 As long as you go with the flow you should be OK. Not true, i was on my way back home from san antonio going around 80 the posted speed limit was 70 and there was people wizzin by me like i was at a stop sign. I sped up to see how fast they were going and i hit 92 then i slow back down to my 80 and set cruise control. About a minute and a half or 2 minutes later here comes the flashing lights pullin me over. i said i dont mean to make excuses or anything but i was goin with the flow and then slowed back down and he said yea well you slowed back down and everyone else didnt so we caught you!!!! that sucked. and if im in a street with kids and potential for them to come in the street i will slow to 15 or so. slowing down 5 or 10 miles is worth being able to stop if need be. Super User Raul Posted January 14, 2008 Super User Posted January 14, 2008 Most larger cities in Mexico are old and streets are narrow, since the city normally doesn 't have suburbs you 've got people living all over the place and kids sprout from the ground like if they were mushrooms, 1 lane is for driving the other one is for parking, you drive slow or you drive slow, in a split second a kid runs from behind a parked vehicle to cross the street. As for driving in highways, I used to drive at warp speed, now I seldomly run over 80 ( what 's the rush ? ). Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 14, 2008 Super User Posted January 14, 2008 Well today when I was driving into work at 3am there was no chance of even doing close to the speed limit. On a four lane highway, no cars around, and 5 inches of snow, even though the speed limit was 65, I couldnt go over 30. : Quote
CGH Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 i'm a slow poke around areas where the little ones may dart out into the street and on the Hight way I'll usually run no nmore than 5 to 8 miles above the speed limited. Like Raul said "whats the rush : Quote
Kimbro Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 40 in a 25 if you refer to the speeding ticket I received from Virginia State Police on Christmas, which is also my birthday. Long story short, I was pulling into a town moving with the flow of traffic when what do I see in the rear view mirror? Nope not Santa, the police. So he pulls me over and immediately asks if I am in law enforcement. I state yes and he asks for my license just to run it really quick. Less than 5 minutes later he presents my a court summons. The funny thing is I usually make it a point to stick at or near the speed limit, especially around kids/residential areas. Don't want to take the chance of hurting anyone. The highway I was on was poorly lit and unfamiliar. No excuse, I deserved the ticket. Sorry to hijack the thread Joe Quote
Fisher of Men Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Another one I could add to the "grind my gears" thread. In our neighborhood, alot of people use it as a cut-across to a major highway. They come into our neighborhood across a major "business highway" usually accelerating through that intersection. Our house is about 75 yards from the intersection and I swear many of them have shifted into overdrive by the time they get in front of my house. On occasion, I'll "accidentally" let the basketball roll out in front of them. After a good wack upside their fender, they'll slow down. I've even added the comment, "What if that were a kid?" I know that's not very nice, but dirty looks don't seem to get their attention. I drive through neighborhoods with kids under the speed limit (probably 20 or less). The thought of losing my daughter or hitting someone else's kid is way too haunting to me. On the highway, I usually try and keep it within five miles over the limit (according to traffic flow). Usually I'm dead on the limit, even though it seems like I'm crawling. No wonder gas prices don't go lower. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 FOM, We had a similiar problem where I use to live. The neighbor put out an old video camera that didnt work. You would be amazed how much slower people drive. Or use a real one and then get a petition for speed bumps. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted January 15, 2008 Super User Posted January 15, 2008 I remember when i was 14....some lady drag racer going 80 on a residential street...came just a few feet from hitting me after i darted after a football.I almost crapped my pants, never saw her coming. My homeboy told me who she was as they knew her.Just out of curious i stopped by the house and asked how fast she was going she replied around 80...then tells me she's a racer @ yellowbelly drag racing track. At the time i wasn't really mad,i was kinda too young to understand and just brushed it off as "I got lucky" kinda deal.So only me and my homeboy knows about this. Nowadays if i saw this,i'd be getting a license plate number and report to the police. Quote
Davis Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 27 years old......I do the speedlimit or a little less. My wife rips on me all the time. But I have never had an accident and I'm a very defensive driver. Always aware of my surroundings. Nothing wrong with that IMO.... Quote
Fisher of Men Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 FOM, We had a similiar problem where I use to live. The neighbor put out an old video camera that didnt work. You would be amazed how much slower people drive. Or use a real one and then get a petition for speed bumps. We've asked the local police to come and clock the cars that go through our neighborhood. Having never seen them actually do it, they claim that no one was speeding through our neighborhood. I'm sure if they sat visible that everyone slowed down. Your video camera idea would work real good if you had a radar gun to go with it. We've just had to really watch our daughter and completely enforce strict limits with her concerning the street. I'll keep the video camera idea in mind. Quote
Ky_Lake_Dude Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 The limit, but if I have the boat on back, A LOT slower. We have to watch for deer more than kids. us too Quote
tipptruck1 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Most of the time the speed limit to five over. Then the one day Iam going 15 over on the highway I get a ticket. Quote
