fellow md anglers, I am in need of some new fishing spots. I live in Calvert. I mostly fish in St. Mary's lake. Last weekend I tried the potomac river north of smallwood but I am not equipped to be fishing in the heavy cover that's up there. Also rivers can be a rough ride in a kayak depending on conditions.

Is there a general idea of where you want to stay in, or are you willing to drive 2-3 hours? What do you want to target, LMB, SH, crappie, perch, anything? Some more details will probably help people help you. But if you're in a kayak, you get to go into the heavy cover where boats don't go and that's a huge advantage.

Went to Black Hills from 9-11AM with my dad and son. I just got the Spro BB1 40 Rat yesterday so it was the first thing I tied on. The water was about 4 ft higher than the average due to the rain yesterday, both boat ramp docks were under water so launching was pretty interesting. Started off on the first cove on the right and my dad picked up a decent 2lber on a Yamamoto Cowboy. I was throwing the rat and I saw a shadow follow it and paused it, then a dink swiped at it but didn't hook up. I was really cool seeing the rat coming at me, followed by the bass in pretty clear water. Then the wind started to really pick up so we went to the opposite side of the main lake to get protected by the wind. I threw the BBZ past an isolated piece of wood and got hit on the pause right on top of it. It was probably just over 1lb.

The BBZ might be my new favorite bait...the action and noise is just outstanding. I think it's gonna be killer at Lake Whetstone where there is a lot of good shallow shoreline under trees and isolated wood structure.

A couple things I noticed about the BBZ 40:

1) If I reeled it too fast, it would actually start rolling over.

2) If I reeled it too slow, it would be more like wakebait.

3) At a perfect slow reel, it was about 2-3 inches underwater with amazing action.

I think the way to work it is like #3, with pauses every few yards. I'm also thinking about using a barrel swivel mustad fastach clip to keep it from rolling.

It is my favorite by far ( really the whole line up from the 25 to the 50 is).  In my experience the lighter you go the deeper you can crank it down and that's what they want sometimes.  Another good way is just letting it sit for a while on top and twitching it a different rates but in spot.  Tight lines!

Lighter/smaller sizes.  I can crank the 25 and 30(more the 30) down pretty good.

I'm will to drive 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I'm mostly in to LMB. I don't have a rod set up for real thick heavy cover. I only have 10 lb mono on my 6'6 mh baitcaster.

Switch the 10lb mono to 30-40lb braid and you should be able to deal with heavy cover. You're pretty far from the spots I fish, but if you have a yak, all the Potomac/Pax tributaries would be prime spots to check out.

Not sure how far Mattawoman is, but you can park here: https://goo.gl/maps/PunhspDyJsT2 and put in at the bridge and paddle downstream to the main creek. There you'll find lots of spatterdock and pickle grass. If you're in a yak, you can easily get back deep into the pads around high tide and fish hollow body frogs, horny toads. During low tide, look for grass edges and fish poppers, or weightless soft jerkbaits just letting them flutter down the edge, or chatterbaits along the spatterdock edges, or pitching jigs into them.

There are a few spots in SoMo that are fun with a yak.  Gilbert run has some great shoreline and some really nice bass.  Myrtle Grove has a good pad field and has some decent bass.  I keep talking to people who have yaked in the Depot Pond, but I have not been brave enough to yet.  I am usually up for SoMo yak fishing, but am slammed/out of town for the next two weeks.  I will try and remember to post next time I am heading down that way, I always love company.

I dropped my yak in Mattawoman State Natural Environmental Area last weekend. That was my first experience with "heavy cover".

I fished Myrtle Grove main pong last weekend. It was a grind. Gilbert Run is a little farther down to 225 right? I would to meet up with fellow yakers.

It's on 6. You can get there from 301 or 5. It's still ok, but no where where it once was. You can catch a few most days. I used to fish it a lot, now not so much. You can fish the Mattawoman with fairly light tackle, but you have to know it and mind the tides.

I actually hit Gilbert Run this morning on foot.  It was way way more stained then I had expected it to be and there were about 300 summer camp kids there.  I lasted about 4 hours of no action before I had leave and go soothe myself with bbq and iced tea.

First warning cast goes over the bow of the paddle boat, the next one, I'm reeling in the smallest child onboard, but my favorite is the thud on the side of a yak...

Drove up to lake centennial this morning. The conditions weren't spectacular (overcast, slick calm and rain on and off) but landed a small LMB and missed two nice ones due to bad hook sets.

Ok, so if I am reading this gadge correctly;

Capture.JPG.19d44f374e1bd5f87e55f3feae8ce65a.JPG

then it looks like the upper Potomac is about back to normal?  Anyone been up that way lately?

I have most of next week off and I have yet to do any wading, thinking about heading up that way for a few days if the river is reasonable.

Hit up Widewater from 5PM to sunset on Saturday. When I first got there, I saw a lot of emergency vehicles and saw 2 rescue boats in the parking lot across from Angler's. I asked one guy if they were launching, and he replied "not yet". So I'm not sure if they were there as a pre-emptive measure, or if there was a rescue or recovery underway.

Anyways, got a small dink at a laydown by the water overflow tower on a Cowboy. No other bites all along the bank before the bridge. The water level was even lower than the last time I went out there. I saw large schools of fish swimming around, wasn't sure what they were, but definitely not bluegill or bass fry. Either white perch or shad, but I didn't think there were any shad in here. Well, walking up further towards the lock, I saw this...some kind of shad.

cyGPz0j.jpg

Towards the lock, I saw about a dozen separate schools pushing water and figured there must be some predators following or waiting for them and switched to a white chatterbait. Still no hits and when the sun started to set, I switched to a popper and ended up with a decent 2.4lb LMB.

I find Widewater pretty frustrating this time of year and at this water level. I'm thinking the bass are along the far walls, which is where I caught this one on the popper. But there are so few access points from the main trail. I may have to try Berma Road on the other side, but access there looks real sketchy too.

I went on Sunday around the Monocacy area and it was still too high and looked like chocolate milk.  But the river has dropped almost another foot since then.  Camped along the C&O a month ago when the Williamsport gauge was 2.3 feet, and it was OK for wading then.

I use the below link for water level on the Upper Potomac.  If the Williamsport gauge reads 3 feet or less, then it is safe for wading.

Hey there fellow Marylanders. I'm selling 2 Fuego CT Lefthand Retrieve reels. Both are NIB, one is 8:1:1 and the other is a 6:3:1. If they are sold as a pair price is 100.00 If sold separately price is 55.00 ea.

I recently purchased a Tatula CT Type R and no longer have a need for the Fuego's. I'm also bank bound and have no need for 3 Baitcasters. I am post pictures upon request.

If anyone is near Randallstown, Walmart has a Berkley Lightning Shock 6'6 M spinning rod for $9 pick up.

If it was the 6' version I'd actually drive the 45 mins to go pick it up as a rod for my son.

So, is this thread dead because;

  1. No one is catching any bass and have all moved on to model trains?
  2. Everyone is catching so many bass that their thumbs are too ripped-up to type?

In my case, I have fished for like 4-8 hours per day for the last three days and have caught nothing.  Did some travel for work and missed like the last 3ish weeks of fishing.  I was catching them pretty well before that on the usual fall stuff.  Now it's nothing.  Spent the last few days primarily with a spinnerbait, a 1.5SK squarebill, and a jig/10" Cuprite on a shakeyhead.  I tried chatterbaits for a bit and even slow-rolled a 68 Special just to see if I could get a bump. Nothing.

Any catching anything around here?

Went twice to Black Hills and came up empty.   But did see a beaver cruise right past me.   Probably laughing at me.

Saw a ton of people out on boats or kayaks.  I just bank fish.  Curious if i need to find a new location or is it possibly the fishing from the bank issue.

Live near Frederick any other good spots?   Heard mouth of Monocacy for smallies and Piney Run Reservoir.  Gambrill State Park or Urbana Fish Management areas any good?

Fishing from shore at BH can be very tough, heavily hit and a good portion of fish are deep.

Monocacy is good smallmouth fishing, only issue is it muddies up quickly in rain and this year that is most of the time.

Piney Run is about the same as BH, cost either 8 or 10 bucks to get in also.

Urbana has been frustrating for me, I have seen plenty of good fish but have a hard time getting bit. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Not sure what is around Gambrill

Last time I took the boat out was 9/16 at Mattawoman. Caught 1 SH and 1 LMB on a very flooded pad field area at high tide.

Since then I've been bank fishing mostly at Widewater and Whetstone. Got a couple small dinks on a green pumpkin wacky senko at Widewater 9/30. Went to Whetstone on Sat 10/13, and caught 5 LMB, I started with a spinnerbait but that was no go, and then went more finesse with a white double tail GY grub with a 1/0 1/8oz Owner Flashy Swimmer. They really liked that and was hammering it casting 45 degrees from the bank. Winds picked up real heavy around 11AM and then I left.

Water temps are dropping fast, and I think I'm going to do a lot of jerkbait/crankbait fishing at Widewater and the Tidal Basin. I may try my hand at some late fall fishing at Black Hills, not sure where to start though. My boat is stuck in my garage while we wrap up renovations...there's a big dumpster taking up our driveway at the moment.

I put all my topwaters away for the season, sadly.

Edit: I'm going camping at Greenbrier State Park 10/27 and plan to do some trout/bass fishing. If you're there let me know, I'll share some Laphroaig 10yr.

Thanks! I figured they are a bit deeper at BH.

I don't know about Gambrill but it was on the state website about a pond near the campground.

Also thought about going up to Thurmont Catoctin area at Hunting Creek Lake or Frank Bentz but i think those are more stocked trout waters.  Which is fine.

Just saw they stocked Great Seneca Creek with 500 trout.  Where do people fish there?

For Seneca creek trout, the usual spots are where the creek and following roads intersects:  Riffle Ford Rd, Black Rock Rd, Darnestown Rd.
