SV1000 Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I was looking for a bait larger than the Baby 1-Minus and saw a Spook at Gander Mountain. Pop-R's have worked really well for me so I decided to go for broke and bought a Super Spook in a bass pattern. Although I try to cast past my target that son-of-gun must be scaring the fish into the next county when it hits the water! But seriously, what type of retrieve do ya'll like? twitch twitch pause or walk it continuous? I never had a hit yesterday morning on anything including the SS, Baby 1 or Buzzbait and I didn't fish with it during the afternoon. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 28, 2008 Super User Posted February 28, 2008 Not a big fan of the super spook here, I prefer the Sammy 128; it practically walks the dog on it 's own. Quote
rfrazier Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Yup, I learned to walk with the Super Spook and am a fan. I'll walk it continuously or try pausing after a few casts. Quote
riverfisher Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Superspook and Storm chug bug are by far my absolute favorites!! Quote
Super User senile1 Posted February 28, 2008 Super User Posted February 28, 2008 I like all Heddon Spooks, but that's probably because I've used them for ages. I've bought one Sammy but I haven't used it yet. Anyway, there are any number of cadences to try when walking the dog. Like any lure, different cadences work at different times. I usually stop the bait now and then, but sometimes a continuous walk works best. Also, you can walk the bait with a large side-to-side motion or a tiny one. Quote
SV1000 Posted February 28, 2008 Author Posted February 28, 2008 I think I have a Sammy 128 but need to look at it to be sure. I fished it a few times and thought that it was defective because it sat tail down. I just Google'd Sammy 128 and see that it works like the video on Luckycraft's website. If mine is the real deal, I really like the finish. Tuesday evening was overcast and the wind was 20+ mph as the front moved through. I managed to find one fish in two hours back in a cove. Wednesday morning was COLD but beautiful otherwise and it warmed up nicely but I didn't catch squat. It has been warm today so I am planning to fish a few hours after work. I am going to try the Spook and the other topwater first, if I start throwing a buzzbait I won't stop unless I grab a Baby 1-. Now that brings up another question. I am sure I can catch a few on stickbaits but are they the right choice pre-spawn when buzzbaits are killing them? Quote
GobbleDog Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 My most productive top water lures are the Zara Puppy and the Spittin Image Jr. The super spook is too big for my taste, but on the flip side the bigger the lure is - the the easier they are to walk and the longer they cast. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 29, 2008 Super User Posted February 29, 2008 Love the spook! One thing I do that I believe most dont is I narrow down an area and just pitch it short distances a few feet apart.I can cover a whole lot of water this way and make a more quiet precise entry right next to the cover whatever it may be. moby bass Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I have a Zara Spook, and to be honest, I've never learned to use it. I have a bunch of odd baits and lures that I purchased and either didn't like or didn't learn how to work. I'm going to throw some of this stuff this year in some tough situations and if I loose it....oh well. Quote
frank4747 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I use a spook jr. in a baby bass pattern and let me tell you....in the month of september here in san diego i kill them all morning long on that lure, i love it. Quote

Well try the SS Jr. It is a great lure! I used to think the full size SS was way to big until I seen fish around 2 lbs or a little less smack the holy dog crap out of it.I have come to find that the large size can really turn them on sometimes,as it appears to be a large one shot full meal deal. DISCALIMER: Just my opinion though.there is no real evidence however that I have ever used or caught a fish on a spook in my life.I could be posing as an expert in the subject.I dont fish large high pressure lakes and tournaments,so I could be a wannabe. lol Quote
bocabasser Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 if you are fishing the everglades here in florida, it is a MUST have bait. i can't tell you how many big bass i have caught on a big spook. i always change the hooks as soon as i get one though. the hooks that come on them tend to be very dull. okie shad is a great color. Super User Tin Posted February 29, 2008 Super User Posted February 29, 2008 A rattling Jr. Spook is usually my go to topwater up here. No one uses them!!! Except LBH. : Quote
SV1000 Posted February 29, 2008 Author Posted February 29, 2008 Does the Luckycraft Sammy have a logo on the belly? I might have an Academy knockoff. I tried using the Super Spook and the other jerkbait last night but the wind was blowing at least 20 and possibly 25 mph. I kept casting into the weeds, casting parallel to the weedline and having the wind blow the bait 15 feet off, ended up with bad backlash and broke my Pinnacle rod slapping the boat during a tantrum. I did however catch 6 bass from 13"-21", hooked at least 6 that I didn't boat and had a few boils on my white buzzbait. I really think the jerkbaits will catch some big fish with some reasonable weather and I think the fish will smash them compared to the PopR's. Do the bass clear the water when they hit jerkbaits? pieman123 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Can someone explain the difference between the super spook and the regular one. I know they come in different colors but is there any thing else? Quote
SV1000 Posted February 29, 2008 Author Posted February 29, 2008 The Super is 5" long with 3 hooks and the SS Jr is 3.5" with 2 hooks. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 29, 2008 Super User Posted February 29, 2008 and the ZARA SPOOK original has no rattles,as does the downsized puppy,no rattles. Quote
ba7ss3in Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 During the summer in the late evenings I like a clear SS. I have had some fun with it. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 29, 2008 Super User Posted February 29, 2008 I like Spooks but this year I'm gonna try this: Jackall Bonnie 128 Quote
rondef Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I use and have good luck with the Zara spook and Zara puppy. What is the super spook? Quote
Jake. Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Does the Luckycraft Sammy have a logo on the belly?I might have an Academy knockoff. No logo, it just has "sammy" written on it. Quote
SV1000 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 Mine is not a Sammy, it's an H2O from Academy, I saw it tonight. It certainly did not "walk itself" as Raul said in an earlier post. Quote

Troutfisch Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 I've used the Super Spook Jr. quite a bit in the past, but in the last couple of years I've been sticking with Skitterwalkers as my primary topwater for both fresh and salt water fishing. They've got great action and require less energy to work imo. Quote
