For Us KC Area Guys - Fishing Reports

I am new to this forum and I was wondering if anybody has fished el dorado this year, planning on getting out there in a few weeks and have never been there. Water temp, good baits to try, and maybe some spots to try from a boat. Any information would be great, thanks.

I have done decent with a jerkbait in the arm on the East side of the lake and have done really well in the summer with a frog in the scum around the bluff walls.

 

I would bail on Olathe and hit up Cedar with a chatterbait....lots of shore access and it should be in the upper 50s by now.  I have had some epic days there but haven't fished it this year with the larger boat.  Perfect lake for a kayak or jon.  Watch out for the poison ivy.

Hit Wolf Creek Friday.  What a fun day!!  78 at the outlet and  58 at the dam.  Caught 2 drum, 1 walleye, 4 largemouth, 12 smallmouth, and 14 wipers.  Most were along the dam with a lipless Livingston and a Shad Rap.  Everyone was catching on the dam.

Some highlights from our weekend at Table Rock.

 

I also fished Wolf Creek Thursday in the beautiful weather. True to form, Wolf fish love the nasty weather. Dozens of largemouth and smallmouth, some whites, some drum including an 11.5 pound monster, and 1 catfish all came to the boat before we got blown off around noon. We tried Melvern for a few, but it was high and muddy again with trash floating everywhere. My biggest bass of the day slammed a Savage Gear Shine Glide and went 4.30 pounds.

I just now saw this, but basically have done exactly what you suggested, with nothing to show for it. It's been pretty discouraging. Gotta keep grinding.

 

Side note, I have a '72 12.9 hp Chrysler outboard that was given to me. Any suggestions where to get it worked on? I tried the boat doctor in Shawnee (I think that's what it's called), but they didn't want to even mess with it.

I've had good luck with US Boatwerks, but not sure they'll work on it or not.

Get the Engine Manual and test it out yourself. That's what I ended up doing with mine after trying Blue Springs Marine (2x). 

Anyone bowfishing? Just got this.

I have done as far as my engine knowledge (and YouTube) can take me. It's compression on the 2 cylinders are way off, and it's also not getting a spark. I think I can fix the spark issue, but I have no idea where to start on the compression. I'll will give your suggestions a shot. Thanks.

I haven't as much as I used to but I love bowfishing, especially for big gar that seem to be hard to find most places. Bighead and silvers on the river are fun, but I don't have the boat for it anymore. Used to go to Perry a few times every summer to bowfish at night. We shot some monster buffalo out there along with boatloads of carp and drum. I usually take mine to Hillsdale when I go and try to whack 10-20 of those bookend 5 pound carp that seem to be in every inch of that lake. Used to be able to bowfish Wyco, where the grass carp look like small whales. They're fun to shoot, but their pulling power and soft skin makes them tough to land. I shot a decent one off the dam at La Cygne last year.

Neat video Bluebasser86. That carp was huge. What do you do with them after shooting them? Think I'm going to BPS in the morning for an arrow and taking my bow with me to Stockton

EDIT also what size bait cast nets do you use?

I've shot a few almost twice that size from Wyco. One night I shot what I thought was a big one, another guy brought in a mid 70 pound fish.

Sometimes I'll have people who want them to eat or use for cutbait, fertilizer, whatever, and I'll give them away. Sometimes I'll find a spot away from everyone and let nature take it's course. They're very destructive, and the state spends thousands of dollars a year on rough fish removal programs, so I don't feel bad leaving them for the raccoons and turtles, they have to eat too afterall. 

 

I mostly use 7 or 8 foot nets. I find them easiest to handle for throwing, while being large enough to be effective.

Solid but unspectacular solo outing at Carbondale City Lake today. Caught 40 or so mainly in 1 to 3 FOW off of steeper rocky banks (where it was 7 feet deep or so within 20 feet of the water's edge). Only a handful were over 15", however. Most came on a bladed jig but also caught a few on a wiggle wart. Once the wind completely died at 11:30 or so, the bite really slowed. I switched to a black/blue Hula Stick rigged Ned style and was able to coax a few more in the boat. WT 49 to 52.

Fished WC yesterday getting in the water about 10. The smallies were a slow for us but we found some shallow (<1.5') largemouth on spinnerbaits and swim jigs in the backs of dirty water coves. It was a very 'different' wolf day for me. The largemouth were mostly between 17"-19". 

 

Put well over 50lbs of drum in the boat... And the fish of the day was probably a 15" crappie.

There's not a Crappie in there under 12", and most of the average ones we catch by accident are around 15-16". My dad caught a 17" Black Crappie on a 3.5" Coffee Tube in November. Freaks.

Anyone here fish the MO or KS River? Bass boats do ok on there?

I wouldn't put mine on either. The current is terrible on the MO, and there's always big logs floating down the river that are hard to see. The KS is really shallow, hard to navigate in most river boats let alone a bass boat. Tons of sediment in the water in both just eats water impellers too. Add in the fact that your carpet and everything in your boat will be covered with a nice coating of silver carp slime and blood from all those things jumping in the boat.
