retro basser Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Chris was replying to me, I know he catches em about every single trip out at Hillsdale. Thanks to all of you for giving me some ideas though. I guess it was just switching down to that light rig that let me catch one. I tell ya, if i had to do this to put food on the table I'd go for whites instead of competing with all the other crappie fisherman out there. Sounds like there is a hair more sport to it too. Let's hope this weather keeps giving us chances... good luck Quote
Chris S Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Chris - Are you asking about white bass? If so, I normally just cast to them. Spinnerbaits, cranks, lipless cranks, jerkbaits, spoons... I guess I could go on and on, but they pretty much eat anything that moves, ha! For me right now, any wind blown bank is a possible white bass zone. If you catch one, there should be some more in the area. If you don't get hit in a few cast there probably isn't any in at that location. I'm no expert with them, just happen to run into them from time to time looking for black bass. I'm sure others will have some better tips for you... I forgot to hit the quote button on the reply, yes my son and I pound them pretty hard, fishing with a 6 year you better be catching something Here is a quick trip down memory lane this year! Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted November 22, 2011 Super User Posted November 22, 2011 By the way... You guys think that a white bass or a wiper? I guess I never really knew there was a difference. That fish is definitely a small wiper, the broken, spotted lines are the give. In terms of what to use to target them, shad baits of appropriate size. We catch a lot of wipers on the lakes that hold them on shad cranks like Rapala DTs. If you're up for casting for them, which can be a riot, fishing big bucktail jigs around rock and windblown shore is a riot. Quote
Chris S Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 That fish is definitely a small wiper, the broken, spotted lines are the give. For the size they fight like mad! I had a 8+ pound wiper on at Lacygne last winter and it broke me off at the boat ! I googled these pics of a white bass and a wiper. 1st one is a wiper, 2nd a white bass. Fun to catch!! Quote
retro basser Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I actually went out there again last week, tuesday maybe, bad fishing day, ended up being colder and windier than the weather guy thought so I left fast. All I could catch out there were wiper, but at least they were biting. I did notice this time they have the two holes on the tounge which is what KDWP says is a wiper/striper trait. I am definitley going to spend a little time chasin em next season. They sound fun especially when the real bass arent biting. Not to mention, like you said Chris, when you're takin a 6 yr old or a 30 yr old novice fisherman, you better be catching somethin Takin the boat out for the last run of the season tomorrow...hope the cold front didnt shut em down. I'm goint to try to fish low-n-slow, main points, very back of creeks. spinners, cranks, traps, jerkbaits, and a white jig if I can find it. Going out on a good day sure will make winterizing the boat easier Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 22, 2011 Global Moderator Posted November 22, 2011 There is a very slim chance they are wipers. They haven't been stocked in Perry and they aren't listed as being in there which kdwp will do even if there hasn't been one caught for years. Whites and wipers both have broken lines http://www.kdwpt.state.ks.us/news/Fishing/Where-to-Fish-in-Kansas/Fishing-Locations-Public-Waters/Region-2/Perry-Reservoir The toothpatch is also not a failsafe as it isn't distinct in a lot of fish. Not saying they couldn't be in there since the state record was obviously caught in the outlet below the lake but that fish probably swam up the Delaware River from the Kansas River. Either way like you said catching something is far better than catching nothing. Quote
Chris S Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Hitting Hillsdale in the a.m. will post Monday! Going to be dragging Crawler rigs for Mr. Wally and cranking for Whites! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 25, 2011 Global Moderator Posted November 25, 2011 Guys I've got a few rods and a reel I'd like to get rid of but don't want to deal with shipping, the rods especially. I have a St.Croix Mojo "spinnerbait" 7' MH/F. I've been using the rod for pitching and it has done pretty well. Rod has been used a lot and has several scuffs but works just fine, asking $40 for it. 2nd I have a Cabela's TXS 7' 6" telescopic walleye casting rod. I believe it's the "deadstick" model but it trolls smaller shad raps and 1/2oz traps great. Probably would be a decent crankbait rod if you like a longer rod. Rod has very little use and sold for $100 new, will take $30. 3rd I have a Cabela's Depthmaster downrigger rod, 8' 2 piece. Rod works very well for bottom bouncers and trolling bigger tail dancer type baits. 4th is a BPS Rick Clunn baitcaster, the purple one in a 7.1 ratio. Has a little rash but works like new, $40. I can email pictures if you need them. Quote
Chris S Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Thank goodness the weather was nice Thursday because the fishing stunk! Lots of fish on the FF in 25 to 35 feet of water. I threw everyting but the kitchen sink at them, Jigs, Spoons, deep diving crankbaits, trolled and nota to show for it. First skink of the year at Hillsdale. WT 48. Quote
retro basser Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Wednesday was my last trip of the year, went to DG CO because I knew i'd have a good chance to catch something. I did too, picked em off all day even fishing the middle hours, 12-4 I think. Ended up with 8. Because it's starting over out there it's funny how you only land 2 sizes of fish, most are exactly at 10'' and the next spawn are little, probably 7''. This trip I was suprised to catch one that didnt fit the mold: This 'hog' actually got up to 12''. Made me wonder how the heck he found his way in there or if it was one of the older fish in the lake. It was a nice enough day to end on, got up to almost 60 and the sun found it's way out most of the afternoon. I'll take it. Chris: I've been out places a couple times with a weather pattern like we had Thursday and had really tough days as well. You know, warmest day of the week, winds strong from the SW. I'm going to try to avoid em in the future if I can. I'm thinking I like the middle days of a stable pattern late in the year. Just a hunch. Well the boat is hibernatin' Any of you guys venture out into the cold make sure to let us know... Quote
Chris S Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I will fish in the winter, week before Christmas last year was one of my best trips to Lacygne ever. Always looking for someone to help with truck gas costs, will let ya know in advance! My boats in the garage next to the wifes car Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 1, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 1, 2011 Got out to Wyandotte for the last day before it closes for the winter. Weather was nice and the fish cooperated fairly well. I had my line break off in the reel on the first bite Got my bait back but no fish. Marked a bunch on the finder so I dropped a jigging spoon and caught a little largemouth on my second hop. Nothing else on the jigging spoon so went back to the shakeyhead. Caught a couple more largemouth and then a feisty smallmouth. My buddy showed up and went to work quickly. He caught a crappie on a pointer and then a healthy smallie on a shakeyhead. I caught a couple more little largemouth and then a really well colored smallmouth on the shakeyhead. Ended up with 6 largemouth, 3 smallmouth, and 1 crappie in 2 hours. Not bad for the last day of November in Kansas! Quote

Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 1, 2011 Super User Posted December 1, 2011 I went hunting this morning and on my way back I noticed ICE on the shallow edges of my local lake! I did make it back this afternoon for a few minutes to fish a shakeyhead from the bank. I missed 2 bites but did land 1 dink. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 1, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 1, 2011 its been a blast posting with you guys! my phone number is 913-449-0296, text me well go fishing. email is filsheone@yahoo.com. peace! I enjoy hearing from all you guys also. I'm thinking we need to get some kind of local get together going. I don't have the time or money to make it to the roadtrip at Guntersville but maybe us local guys can plan a day trip or weekend trip to Melvern, Milford, Perry, Lake of the Ozarks or something? It's been discussed in the past I think but never really come together but it sounds like a good time to me if we can get a few people to show. Even if we do just a small get together at Kill Creek or Olathe the fishing might not be as good but would still be a good time. If you guys are interested I say we should try to get this off the ground. Quote
Chris S Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Monthly meeting at an easy place to meet like Birdies off of I-35 & 75th St? I would be open to fish a few other lakes around the area but I aint dragging my boat or truck down and pot holed dirt roads Quote

I would be open to fish a few other lakes around the area but I aint dragging my boat or truck down and pot holed dirt roads Well if we did a get together we could probably have people pair up so gas money could be split and not everyone is pulling a boat. Would be kind of hard to fish together and get to know your fellow BR members if everyone is fishing alone in their own boat I can think of several lakes within about an hour and half that you'd never touch dirt road. Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 1, 2011 Super User Posted December 1, 2011 Next spring we could rent out the cabins at lasygne for a weekend? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 2, 2011 Global Moderator Posted December 2, 2011 Next spring we could rent out the cabins at lasygne for a weekend? I think I'd rather do that at Melvern. At least at Melvern you can usually catch something. If La Cygne is off you might not get a bite all day. One problem with both could possibly be the wind. I think maybe we should get location suggestions from everyone and take a vote. I'll put mine in for Melvern Quote
Chris S Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 I am up for what ever! As for pairing up thats fine but I have two guys who fish with me that already pitch in for truck gas, if they bail out I think it would be cool to meet new folks and talk fishin! Quote
retro basser Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Melvern sounds like a good call for destination bassin' Also it might be real easy just to plan a 'everyone call in sick to work' day and attack one of these local lakes. I can either bring a boat or some beer, whichever is in greater demand that day Quote
Chris S Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Anyone hear anything on Lacygne yet? Thinking about Sunday trip down with this first snow fall. Quote

I'll put mine in for Melvern Having a get together sounds like fun. I'd vote for either Melvern or Perry (assuming Perry would have a cabin or camping available). I'd also like to hit the Pitt Strips someday too. I'll have an open seat if someone needs someone to go with. Quote
IFindFish Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I fished LaCygne last Thursday afternoon (12/1). Water was 57 at ramp and 65 right at the outlet. One stack pumping smoke. 12 trailers at the park ramp. Saw 2 or 3 other boats near outlet area. Others were down south I guess? I fished/trolled for whites and wipers. Caught 2 dozen 8" whites, 2 - 16" wipers, 4 - 8" cats, one 12" crappie, a 6" LMB and a walnut. Quite a mix. First time to catch a walnut! Shad balls were everywhere, not just near the outlet. I spoke with another couple gents as I was pulling out at sunset. They had caught 4 LMB all day. Biggest was 4 lbs. I think this recent cold snap should move them around a bit. Anybody been to Coffey County lately? Quote
