I am looking for a new closed face reel.

My two 20+ yr old abu garcias are on borrowed time.

I fish mostly for smb and lmb which also means lots of pickerel

typicaly i use 12 lb test mono on one

and braided on the other

looking for input.  i read reviews at bass pro and cabelas , seems like they are all over the place.

I have a couple open face reels that i use also but i love the simplicity of my old abu garcias.

Are the new ones as good?  I also see the diawa and zebco closed face reels for short $

You want a Daiwa Goldcast.

I bought one of these for my son, it's really solid and worth the money. Best closed face I've seen.

Someone had a nice one for sale in the Flee Market section a few days ago.  Check and see if it's still there.

My partner, Speedy Madewell, is a guide on the Tennessee

River. He bought a couple of the Zebco Omega a couple of

years ago. They get used quite a bit, have never been serviced

and have held up well. I have used the reels for baitcatching

on several occasions. The Omega is solid and smooth.

before I got into baitcasters, I used and still have a 1989 american made zebco 33 Rhino tough edition that has caught numerous bass including a 5 lb pig largemouth. The only problem I have had was a spring went missing, I easily fixed it with a spring from a newer reel that broke. You can probably find them cheap on ebay. Although I might be putting mine up on the flea market soon! :)

The Century and Laker were awesome reels, my father still prefers his laker over all, unfortunately somebody else does too and stole it. He never even let me try that reel. :)

I still have a purchased new Johnson Century and Citation. They are not very sturdy and have a very low gear ratio. Both still work very well though--yep--I'm old.
