I use to do my own tune-ups on my cars & trucks - about 30 years ago now. But since the advent of the new "plug & play" modular replacement parts and technically complicated emission devices, there is no "tune-up" that you can actually do anymore. You are forced to take it to a qualified mechanic.

Likewise, I use to strip down, clean and re-lube all my reels each winter. Now-a-days however, I'm being forced to do like my autos....and take them to a "qualified" mechanic for maintenance. The parts and screw on the newer Shimanos and Pfluegers demand specialized tools for access to the areas you really need to get to. Everything seems to be opposed to Henry David Thoreau's philosophy of: "Simplify...simplify!"

I wonder....is technology developing for the benefit of we fishermen? Or, for the benefit of the manufacturers? I sure will be happy when ice is out so I can focus on more important matters.

Technology favors the companies that either sell you more stuff, saying ya gotta have it, or companies with premium services that bill you every month like cell phones. Every 6 year old I know has their own cell phone and they gotta have an IPOD. It's more about companies making money than your convenience.

Tires are what ticking me off. The last 15 or 20 years the cars I've had come standard with performance tires that last 15,000 miles and I've not noticed an enhancement in my performance, I'm not at the Indy 500. My car is 11 months old with 13, 500 miles and I'm entering the tire market.
