B A S S E R Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Would a Pflueger President Micro Ultralight Spinning Reel matched with a St Croix Triumph 5' UL be a good setup for a UL Bass Fishing setup? I don't want to spend much more than $115. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 My 5'6" Fenwick IM7 and Shimano Sahara 1000FD reel is a super ul setup for under $100. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 I remember Muddy saying he had a very bad experience with the guides in the Triumph series. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 Ultra-light rigs are for crappie, stocker trout, white bass and bream, not bass. 8-) Quote
B A S S E R Posted July 1, 2009 Author Posted July 1, 2009 Thanks for the suggestions. Would 4# Floro be a respectable line for that setup? Quote
B A S S E R Posted July 1, 2009 Author Posted July 1, 2009 I like using UL for fishing weightless plastics. Plus its more of a challenge. I handled a 10# Largemouth with my previous UL setup. Quote
B A S S E R Posted July 1, 2009 Author Posted July 1, 2009 My 5'6" Fenwick IM7 and Shimano Sahara 1000FD reel is a super ul setup for under $100. I just checked the BPS website and the Sahara is $80 and all the Fenwicks are over $100... Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 Ultra-light rigs are for crappie, stocker trout, white bassand bream, not bass. You're kidding, right ? Bassman : The reel is fine. I would suggest a longer rod. 6' minimum, 6' 6" would be ideal. Your casting performance will be much better. If you can swing it, step up to the St. Croix Premier. 8-) Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 You might want to look into a longer rod. More in line with a 7' - 8' model. "B n' M" makes a dandy, called their "Sam's Super Sensitive". It's a heck of a buy at about $50.00. I've paired mine with a Shimano Symetre 750, filled with 2# test fluorocarbon. Also makes a heck of a panfish rig. Yep, it's a tad on the light side for big bass, but if you don't have a lot of obstructions, it can be used very efficiently. Biggest I've taken on this outfit is a 3.2 lb. smallmouth out of 35' of water. Took awhile to bring her up, but patience and back-reeling did wonders. This is definitely not a sport for the weak of heart! I only do this a couple of times a year and have yet to loose a smallie. Great fun! Quote
Super User .RM. Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 I have 5 UL setups that I have put together this year all using the Bass Pro Shops® Micro Lite Elite Spinning Reels on four 7' St.Croix 3SULF's and one on a 7'6" 3SMLXF. Using live bait on 4# test. We have been consistently catching 17" and 18" spots out of one of my favorite watering holes. More fun than I had the whole 11 years on the tourney trail for sure... 8-) Ultra-light rigs are for crappie, stocker trout, white bassand bream, not bass. 8-) RW you are kidding with this aren't you.... Super User Sam Posted July 1, 2009 Super User Posted July 1, 2009 Wow! I did not pay over $100 for my little UL Fenwick. I wonder if it was stolen? Quote
B A S S E R Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 Thank you for all the advice. This has really made my choice easier. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Ultra-light rigs are for crappie, stocker trout, white bassand bream, not bass. 8-) Yeah, I too beg to differ with that statement. Im not saying your going to winch a 6lber outta the deep deep junk, but large fish are possibly on UL's. There was a puddle out back of our last house in town, I would run down and dig out a couple 2 n 3 lbrs once and awhile. What a blast a 3lb bass is on UL's. It was a soft bottom weedless lil hole with alot of over hanging brush, and the occasional X-Mas tree I'd toss in. Lotta fun UL's can be with the right conditions. Pflueger President Micro Ultralight Spinning Reel, thats a nice little reel, a friend has one on a St Croix Premier UL. its a nice smooth set up. Quote
PondHunter Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I bought an UL setup last year that has worked very well for me. Its a 7' Gander Mountain rod, 4-8lb test, with a Mitchell Avocet reel spooled with Stren 4lb clear mono. This rig was less than $100 and has accounted for plenty of 2.5-3lb Bass. A longer rod will cast further and be much better at landing a fish. I use Eagle Claw Aberdeen hooks in #8 and #10 sizes. I tested the #10 to find out how much weight would straighten it out, it took 7lbs I also use the Trilene knot. The line will break before the knot will. Quote
chris fenk Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I caught an 8 pound 4 ounce bass on an ultra light. St criox premier 5.6 ul sahara 750 6 pound cajun red and a minnow.I was crappie fishing. I have caught numerous 4-5-6 pound fish on ultra lights.I even caught a 17 pound catfish on one! Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 4, 2009 Super User Posted July 4, 2009 You don't need to waste your money on the fluorocarbon. Pretty much any name brand #4 mono will be fine. Quote
