Koop Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Ok this may seem like a very silly question... With my spinning reels I reel with my left hand but hold my rod with my right hand. When looking at baitcasting reels all the "right" handed reels you reel with your "right" hand and hold the rod with your left... Can someone clear this up? It feels like I should be getting a left handed bait casting reel then unless I'm missing something obvious? Quote
Steven Ladner Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 It's whatever feels comfortable to you. For spinning, I reel with my left hand. For baitcasting, I reel with my right hand. It's all about what feels better to you. Quote

Koop Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 Ok just wanted to make sure there wasn't a reason I was missing as to why it may be done like that. Just seems kind of silly to cast with my right hand, switch the rod to my left to reel. To bad left handed bait casters are more difficult to find it seems. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted June 15, 2009 Super User Posted June 15, 2009 Hmm... This comes up twice a week. Here's the answer according to one of the top guides in the country: George Welcome Sebastian, Florida Why is the reel handle on the right hand side. Aug 22nd 2007 Let's get technical, as there are in fact reasons, not just some lame holdover from days past that put the handles where they are. What will move the fish during retrieval is placed to the strong hand! A baitcast is designed to be used as a winch, so it is the reel that retrieves the fish. Hence if you are right handed the handle is in your right hand. A spinning reel is designed to pick up unloaded or loose line, not retrieve the fish. Hence it is the rod that does the retrieval, so it is the rod that is in your strong hand. If you are right handed then the pole goes to the right hand. George Welcome Sebastian Florifda Quote

NBR Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 If you are going to palm the reel during retrieve you will probably be better off casting and retrieving with the same hand. Quote
rubba bubba Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 There is no science behind either - choose which one you are most comfortable with. Most skateboarders skate with their strong foot in the rear; some prefer the other way (this style is called "goofy foot") and still are as good as the best out there. The point is there is no right or wrong here, it's all preference and style. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 16, 2009 Super User Posted June 16, 2009 There is no science behind either... Well, I certainly don't agree with that statement and have already posted George Welcome's summary of "The Science". If you think that only applies to salt water fishing, that's fine, but there is in fact a reason for designating left or right hand retrieve. 8-) Quote

And it is based on assumptions both in fishing style (I personally don't winch my fish, so the science is invalid for me) and also that one can't winch with a spinning reel. So I will have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Welcome. Quote

Actually, 'goofy" or "regular" foot has NOTHING to do with "strong foot" in back or front. Regular is is left foot forward, and goofy is right foot forward. It derives from surfing.I'm right handed, right footed, skate goofy, throw right, bat left, golf left, and reel using both left and right handed baitcasters, depending on the app. Quote
