SmallieFever Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Hey guys, I'm having trouble casting Flouro on my spinning outfit. I've got a St. Croix Legend Tournament "Tube" rod matched with a Shimano Stradic FI spooled with 8lb Suffix flouro. I had the same results with 6lb Trilene 100% Flouro on the same rig. It comes off the spool in large loops, which has a hard time flowing through the guides. This restricted flow has shortened my casts by nearly half the distance I can achieve with monofilament. I've used the KVD line conditioner without much success in the way of casting. This has to be a common occurrence, so I would think there would be a way to deal with this problem....I'm just not smart enough to figure it out : Thanks! Quote
bassprofishguy Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 your not alone alot of flor/spinning useers have this same problem even though i hate spiderwire the new flour they got out is supposed to work good on spinning outfits but as for the trilene everyone who puts it on spinning reels has the loop problem seems its more made for casters, why not use a braid then a flour leader?did you make sure your lines not coiled/twisted on the spool? try taken a swivel tie it to a tree and walk out the line and uncoil it see if that helps. Speed Worm Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Don't use fluorocarbon line on spinning outfits. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted May 26, 2009 Super User Posted May 26, 2009 That seems a bit strange. I have personally ever had trouble as you described with 6# fc line on a spinning reel. I wonder if it is the size of the spool perhaps? What size is the reel? To give you some perspective, I have used size 2000 and 2500 reels without a problem and this is without any kind of line conditioner. I hope others can chime in. Quote
tbird Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Turn the spool over and wind it on the other way and see if you get the big loops. Inferior fluoro does not cast well either. Also did not know that Sufix made fluoro? T Quote

Super User dodgeguy Posted May 26, 2009 Super User Posted May 26, 2009 use a 4000 size reel and get seguar invizx.pros like kvd use 4000 size reels with flouro for this reason. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 26, 2009 Super User Posted May 26, 2009 1. When spooling your spinning reels, take wash cloth and spray a section with Kevin VanDam's Line and Lure Conditioner. Run line onto reel through the wet spot on the wash cloth. 2. During the spooling process, spray the line on the spool after 10 to 15 turns to help soak the line. 3. Be sure to have tension on line when spooling line on reel. 4. Guys above are correct, spool line off bottom of line spool onto spinning reel. 5. Check rod and reel specs. Just double check to make sure the rod's specs balance with the line test and bait weight. 6. Consider adding a swivel to your line either via a swivel and leader or a snap with a swivel. This will help reduce, not eliminate, line twist. 7. You know to move bail with hand and not handle; put pressure on line off spinning reel after each cast and before you start to reel; and do not overload the spinning reel with line. 8. Try putting less line of spinning reel. 9. Put a flouro line on the reel and see if the same problems persist. 10. Change out rods. Maybe you need a longer rod or one with more tip action. There is a reason for the problem and you need to find it. I have Shimano spinning reels and they work great, especially when you put new line on them. A seven-foot rod is also a great advantage when casting. Good luck and let us know what you find out. P.S. Remember, when you get line twist, loosen bail and pull line off the spinning reel without opening the bail. This prevents the line form flying off the reel and twisting into a ball. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 26, 2009 Super User Posted May 26, 2009 Don't use fluorocarbon line on spinning outfits. Simple solution. Otherwise, Chris Fish suggests braid with a fluorocarbon leader. I don't use either. #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid is almost as stealthy as Fluro, much stronger and far more manageable. 8-) Quote
Chris W Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I have never tried the brands you are talking about but I use the BPS Fluorocarbon all the time in 6lb and 8lb on my spinning reels without any trouble. They are the old Daiwa SS Series 1300 and 1600. Quote

Glad you said that about VanDam's spray. I used to use WD40 on Mono (it worked) but didn't know what to use on floro. I also tied one end to a tree and walked out farther then I could cast and stretched the mono. Do you think this would work for floro? Quote

Otherwise throw PowerPro with a leader. Quote
SmallieFever Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 I spooled the reel (3000 size) like the manual suggests, just like you would a baitcaster...having someone hold the spool of line via pencil through the center. I can't remember if the line came off the top or bottom of spool, but i do know that there was no twist. I sprayed the line while spooling periodically with the KVD spray. It does not jump off the spool or behave badly besides this casting issue. I did switch reels and mono of the same size (8lb) cast like a dream. I only wanted to try flouro because I wanted to be more stealthy on some of the ultra clear NY lakes I frequent (tubes and drop-shot). maybe I'll give the Yo-Zuri hybrid a try... Quote
bassprofishguy Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Yo-Zuri hybrid great stuff and super cheap!!!! Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 26, 2009 Super User Posted May 26, 2009 Smallie, maybe you should use a longer spinning rod???? Quote
SmallieFever Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 The Legend Tournament Bass Series "Tube" rod is 7ft....and still doesn't cast worth a darn with the two different brands/sizes of flouro. Quote
SmallieFever Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 I thank you guys for all the input Maybe I'll try the tying it to the tree method with a swivel...then try to spool it onto my Quantum E30PTi. The bigger spool may help? I just hate like heck to have to throw it away after paying 40 bucks for two spools! This will be my last resort before getting some Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 28, 2009 Super User Posted May 28, 2009 For the past 2 years (this will be my 3rd.), on my tube rod (7' Med. Act.) I've been using Vanish Transition, with no problems at all. It's a hybrid fluorocarbon - from what I gather - but casts like a dream. No twisting either, but I'm putting it on a Symetre. Have caught a lot of smallmouth on this line. I'm happy. Quote

Soaking any "cat gut" in hot water before spooling will eliminate those coils, never seen it fail. I use 10# pp freshwater 15# PP saltwater with mono leaders, never saw any advantage to fluro when I've used it. Quote

Smallie, I'm right there with you. I've never been able to tame fluoro on a spinning reel!! But braid with a fluoro leader works great, although I'd rather have straight fluoro if I could figure out how to make it work. Quote
SmallieFever Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 Well, yesterday I got on Cabela's site and ordered a 600yd spool of 8lb and a 600yd spool of 6lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft at $11.99 each....which I didn't that was too shabby Lets just hope I like it! J Francho- That is a TOAD! Beautiful fish man. The braid with Flouro leader will be my next try for sure. Quote
