jeremyt Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Today I went out fishing during my lunch break. I was throwing a sr-5 shad colored, shad rap. I was jerking it to get it 3-4ft below the surface. Then twitching it and letting it sit for a few seconds then a small jerk and twitch and repeating. I was able to catch 4 bass in about 45 minutes this way, nothing to speak of the biggest was about 12 in. My question with the baits is, should I continue this or should I go purchase some suspending jerk baits? With the temps dropping for the past few days the fish are holed up in the deepest parts of the pond, so I know where the fish are. On one side I have the feeling of, if you have this working why switch and on the other I feel a jerk bait would require less effort to keep at that depth and get the action that works. Thanks Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 6, 2007 Super User Posted December 6, 2007 Suspending baits are very tricky because they suspend at a particular water temperature otherwise they sink ( cold ) or rise ( warm ). Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 Shad rap RS suspend and can be fished like a jerkbait. Allen Quote
Terry_ Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 The three or four foot depths that you are fishing should be real easy to maintain with the shad rap. If however, you wanted to try some different jerkbaits, I say go for it. A mild change in action and/or color just might trigger the bigger fish. While you and the bait monkey are hanging out you should check out the Rapala DT3 cranks, the flat version. These suspend good around that depth maybe a little deeper. The DT series seems to produce bigger strikes for me. I don't know much about the stucture in the pond, but they might be worth a try. Quote
jeremyt Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 Thanks guys, I will try the RS version and the DT3 cranks, the pond is really weird to me, the majority of it is like fishing the flats, and then by the drainage area, its like a bowl with a max depth of about 12 ft. With the temps dropping the past few days all of the fish ( as far as I can tell) have moved off the flats into the bowl area. All of the fish I caught were suspended in 5ft or less, well excuse me thats were the strikes happened. I was really exited today, because I finally for once understood the condition and what to expect from it. On a side note, how does water temps affect suspending baits? I think thats interesting and a good bit of knowledge to have. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 Another vote for the suspending Shad Rap. Falcon Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 The Glass Shad Rap also suspends but still, like I said before they not always supend, it depends on the water temperature. Quote
