Senko Rod questions

I fish on the Potomac River and have found that the Senko is one of the best baits to use when it seems nothing else is working. I've decide to purchase a rod dedicated to this bait. I prefer casting rods to spinning rods however the Potomac is often very windy so I'm concerned this will cause problems casting a bait caster into the wind. Most of the time I'll be fishing this setup in heavy hydrilla and milfoil so I plan to use 30lb. Power Pro braid. What kind of setup would you recommend for this application? (spinning or casting, action, length, specific rods, etc.?)

I use a Shimano Crucial 6'10" MH Extra Fast tip with a Shimano 100 DSV. 30# Sufix Braid with a Fluoro Leader. Wacky or Trig.

What size senkos are you throwing? The weight difference in a 5 and 6 is a noticeable difference.

I throw a 6" Senko on a Dobyns 734, perfect for throwing senkos in or around "junk" .

I use a Revo STX with 50lb braid and a 15lb fluorocarbon leader.

I fish it on a 7'6" flippin stick with 50lb braid in heavy grass or cover.

On the other hand a 7' m spin rod with 10lb flouro gets the nod in more open areas or wacky fishing, switch to a 6' with 20lb braid around docks (skipping)

I fish Senkos on spinning tackle.  I use a Med power fast action St Croix rod and 20# power pro. Depending on conditions, I use anything from 6' to 7' long rods for senkos.

G. Loomis GLX or MBR 844C for what you think you need.

However, I fish all soft plastics, including 6" Senkos, on

spinning tackle. Specifically, St. Croix ES70MF/ Shimano

Stella 2500FB and Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6.

I usually use spinning but when I do use BC gear I use my 6'9" MHF Carrot stick with a Fuego spooled with 30# PowerPro. Its meant for jigging but I think it loads up well with a senko type worm.

I'm not trying to be critical of your reccomendations (they are good for other situations), but the guy is talking about dragging big fish out of heavy barnacle laden cover. You really need heavy tackle.

This rod will work for any freshwater fish and light salwater species.

Perhaps in certain environments, braid becomes part of the equation,

too.

avid 7ft med-hev fast .... thats where id start .... plenty of power ... in fact this is the rod i use to fish senkos in cover ...

7 or 7.5 foot mh casting rod with a good fast action.

Thanks for the sugguestions.  I have an 844C rigged up for flipping jigs and creature baits.  I'll try the senko on it this weekend and see if I like the fit.  If so, I may be in the market for another!

pretty much any rod that is around 7' and has a medium power, fast action will launch a senko pretty good.

If you have an 844C try something different.  The best Senko rod on the market in my opinion is the GLoomis BCR 893 GLX.   I have this rod rigged with a Daiwa Steez 103H modded with a 90mm carbon crank and cork grips supported with 4 handle bearings.  It is without a doubt one of my favorite combo's to use.

The Loomis BCR 854 is worth a look too.  It has plenty of muscle to hoss a fish outta cover.

I use a BCR 803GLX for most of my Senko fishing but for some heavy cover the MBR 844C would do nicely. It has a ton of muscle. I have cought several fish on this rod and it has never let me down. As for it's raw power, I caught a 42lb Carp on this rod yesterday (by acccident). It was just as about as much fun as you can get. I thought I had broke the state record but I was a 1lb short. The 844 had no problems handling this big fish at all.

Just in case, I have no picks to back this up.  Somebody remind me to buy a pocket digital camera.

Well I got the opportunity to test the MBR 844c IMX Senko setup over the weekend.  The rod was paired with a Shimano Curado DHSV and 20lb Berkley 100% Floro Pro.  I fished in a club tournament on the Potomac River and was able to land a 4.7lb bass in heavy hydrilla with this setup.  Casting was not a problem either.  I definetly plan to buy another to use as a dedicated Senko rod!
