alabamabassmaster Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 What's the recommended gear ratio for crankbaiting? I have four crankbait rods, a deep crankbait rod (DD-22), medium crankbait rod (10-12ft, Deep Little N) a medium-shallow crankbait rod (6-12ft) and a lipless crankbait rod. What do you guys use as in gear ratio for these? Quote
tennwalkinghorse Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 6.2:1 is what I use if you want a slower retrieve go for a 5.0:1 JMHO Quote
alabamabassmaster Posted June 22, 2008 Author Posted June 22, 2008 Right now all of my crankbait rods have 5.3:1 gear ratio reels. I'm curious if someone else will work better, I like what I have but curious to what everyone is using and how they like it. Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted June 22, 2008 Super User Posted June 22, 2008 I think what you have there is a good ratio. That's about what I was using until I went to low pros. The slowest retrieve I have now is 6.2:1,I just slow my retrieve down abit when I'm crankin'. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted June 22, 2008 Super User Posted June 22, 2008 Useing a 6.2:1 for deep cranking will wear you out if you use it all day. A 5.3:1 is fine for most cranking but I love my David Fritts 4.7:1 for deep cranking. I can fish all day long and never get tired. It's not the most expensive and it's hard to adjust at first but it will cast a mile and it has enough power to get the big ones to the boat. Quote
alabamabassmaster Posted June 22, 2008 Author Posted June 22, 2008 I've always been told the Lew Childre was the best crankbait reel they make. I was told it's like a "winch" the way it reels in. I like my Abu Garcia's but I think I want a change. When I throw my deep crankbaits, the rod wears me out. It's a 7ft Berkley IM50-7CBR Medium action rod. My medium cranking rod, I love it and it doesn't bother me to throw it all day. It's a Abu Garcia Tournament Grade ATG701M 7' Medium casting rod. It handles big spots like a dream, real flimsy like I like em. Quote
gopherbass Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 I like a 6.2 for lipless. I also like 6.2 for shallow cranks as I'm usually moving pretty fast and need a faster reel to keep the lure moving. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 22, 2008 Super User Posted June 22, 2008 The CTE200GT is 5.0:1 and there is one offered in the Flea Market: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1213359716/4#4 I like this reel, I have two! 8-) Quote
