Supertuning

I have Pflueger President that is a three or four years old. Recently I have been having some problems with it and last week the spool stopped turning right and it won't cast hardly at all. I found a place that will repair and clean it for $20 plus the cost of parts. They also have a supertuning service for $40 (cleaning/repair service included). I am definately going to get it repaired but do you think it is worth it to have it supertuned? Have any of you guys ever supertuned or had your reels supertuned? Did it increase performance greatly?

It depends on what "super tuning" is.It could mean anything from just cleaning and changing bearings,to polishing the gears and spool shafts,putting bearing supported worm and idler gears.I've done this to a number of my reels,and it does make a difference.Also,who is offering this service? Ask around and see if anyone else had service done by them.Try cleaning your bearing first,and see if this helps.It could be that they are dirty,and that may be the cause of your reels decrease in casting distance.

Thats what I was wondering. I thought it sounded sort of on the expensive side but I didn't have any other price to compare it to.

Super tunning may mean changing the lubricants ( specially oils ) for less viscous ones, there will be a in improvement ? yes, as long as the lubricant is there. It may mean poilshing a few parts, yes, there will be improvement, changing bearings, for 40 dollars ? nope I don 't think so.

Tunning may mean a lot of things, for example, change your vehicle 's air filter for another one with more porosity and you gain a couple of horsepower, there you have it, your vehicle is "tuned"; same thing applies to reels.

IMPO a reel that new doesn't need supertuning. Most of to-days reels that are having casting problems and don't feel good at all, are problems derived from not having the reel/s service and maintained (PM = preventive maintenance) as they were out of the box from the beginning.

There are a few articles around about supertuning this is just one that was in field and stream..

I would be careful I got a worm gear replaced and a clean n oil job done for 6$ here in Oklahoma so you might shop around. ;D

I'm surprised someone would even look at a reel for $6.

Like oldschoolbasser said, it depends on what that company means by super tune. I repair and maintain my own reels along with my friends reels, call it a hobby if you will, and do take the extra steps to make them as smooth as possible, but super tune can mean a lot of things from like some said, high grade oil to changing drag washers to smoothies to allot of things.

I would contact the company and ask them what they mean by super tune. 40 bucks may sound like allot, but it all depends on what your getting for that 40 bucks. If there sanding and polishing and all that, it takes some time to do it right and is worth 40 bucks IMO, depending on how much you love that reel and want it to last, not to mention the performance gain you can get if done right.
