Brian_Reeves Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Hey guys, I'm looking for a baitcaster that I can slam on a 6 or 6'6 rod that will handle weights in 1/8 to 1/4oz. I'm looking for hopefully less than 100 or 150 bucks. It doesn't have to be a spectacular reel, just something that can handle lighter weights. Any recommendations?? I'm really not wanting a spinning reel because I am garbage with them. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 If it's all in the rod then, that really opens up my playing field. I would have guessed that the reel was where it was at. Looks like I'm still learning lol Quote
Captain Chaos II Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I think it is better to match the finesse rod and reel together. A Medium Light to Medium rod with a finesse reel. Throwing an 1/8 on a finesse reel vs regular, you can probably tell the difference. I have a Daiwa Pixy which I switch between a ML and Med rod depending upon the situation. That reel is friggin awesome. With upgraded drag, it really has a wide range + is a pleasure to fish. Doesn't meet your price range though.... Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 29, 2008 Super User Posted May 29, 2008 Hey Brian. my go to finesse stick is a BPS Pro finesse rod. 6'9" medium light baitcast rod. Sells for $100, but goes on sale every year for 80. I have a Johnny Morris Signature series reel on it, loaded with 10lb test XL. Got the reel for 120 and the rod for 80. A $200 combo that is the one I pick up when most would choose a spinning rod. Not to most expensive setup, but it does the job for me. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 29, 2008 Super User Posted May 29, 2008 Brian, Get your hands on a Pixy and you wont be dissapointed. You'll pay a little more but I guarantee it will become one of your favorite reels. Quote
Chad. Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 The pixy 2x his price range go with a ebay chronarch 50mg or maybe a used curado 100d. Or daiwa sol for 180 dollars. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 29, 2008 Super User Posted May 29, 2008 Brian please list the reels you own, depending upon that I can tell you if you need a reel or not. Quote
SoCalRob Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 The Pixy is out of your range, but would be the ticket. My 2nd choice would be the Chronarch 50mg. But like everyone else says, the rod better be M/L or Med. with a soft tip. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 29, 2008 Super User Posted May 29, 2008 A Calcutta 50 will cure what ails ya. And stop athlete's foot in it's tracks. Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 Brian please list the reels you own, depending upon that I can tell you if you need a reel or not. All are baitcasters 3x Quantum Tourney Wal-Mart combo reels...I don't know their actual name 1x H20 Xpress 10 bearing 1x Bass Pro Shops Tournament Special piece of on a clearance rack junk ;D It used to be a good reel, but time is catching up to it pretty badly. Boett43 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Do you all think the curado 100D would be a good finess reel for smallmouth and river fishing? Quote
tennwalkinghorse Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 A freind of mine was using a Calcutta CT-50B this week end and man let me tell you that little thing was putting a lite lure out there. I think he said he payed $130 for it new. Quote
