Super User roadwarrior Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Just curious, doesn't anyone know the difference between these two lines? Quote
fatbass Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I've used both fairly extensively. The main difference for me is that I can get 1000 yards spool of Big Game instead of only 300 for xt while shopping at the wal mart. Quote

Super User flechero Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 That one came out of left field. : RW, My own experience is that Big Game feels stretchier. It also seems to take on memory much sooner than XT. I like Big Game a lot for striper fishing in the river and for saltwater fishing. This might be the better analogy... XT will fish and feel more like Hybrid than Big Game will. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 2, 2008 Author Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Yeah, I asked this (in context) on another thread and didn't get an answer. I am really just curious, as a casual observation they seemed the same, just different branding. Thanks for the reply! Quote
Super User flechero Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Dang it, I didn't even mention that XT seems MUCH more abraison resistant and harder. You had me thinking it was some kind of joke. ...lol I think they are very different lines. (and I think XT is well worth the cost) Quote

(and I think XT is well worth the cost) very true as I have both lines one on baitcaster and other on spinning and flechero is right on the money 8-) Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 Big Game is stronger, not as stiff, & it will show memory sooner but only when not being used often. 1 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 I never caught the "taking on memory sooner" aspect when I tried Big Game. I noticed everything Flechero mentioned except for that. Geez, am I glad I'm not the only one feels this way about XT. The way everybody was bitchin' about it last summer I thought I was the only one who liked it. AND....I like it even better with the most recent changes they made to it. The thing I noticed right off the bat was Big Game is more stretchy and that was enough to send me right back to XT. It's decent line, especially for the price but I like XT WAY better. Quote
The Next KVD Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I always thought Big Game was originally made for Saltwater. It feels like its thicker and has more memory than XT. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted April 2, 2008 Super User Posted April 2, 2008 I always thought Big Game was originally made for Saltwater. It feels like its thicker and has more memory than XT. You thought right. Dunno if anything has MORE memory than XT. Haven't tried it if it does. Not saying it doesn't exist, but XT has memory baby!! Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 I like Big Game. It's cheap. I use it for backing on all my reels. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 I've used them both (including Big Game - Inshore) and they're extremely similar, except XT is only available up to 20-lbs whereas Big Game is a saltwater line available up to 80-lbs. They're both too wiry for spinning tackle, but both have very good abrasion-resistance, but not as good as Ande. There's less than 1cm difference in their stretch factor, so that's a wash. I'm not supposed to know this, but a few years back a Berkley rep was quoted as saying (probably at a free luncheon) that Berkley inhouse testing found Trilene Sensation to be the strongest, most stretch-resistant and abrasion-resistant Trilene line. But of course, touting this publicly would be shooting themselves in the foot. Roger Quote
The_Natural Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Trilene XT is one of the first coated lines ever introduced. Big Game is very popular and works well, while XT is stiffer and has better abrasion resistance. Big Game should be considered the gap in between XT and XL. I used Trilene XT for many years when I was younger...it never failed me. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 Big Game is more elastic than XT ( more stretch ) XT ...... they don 't call it XT for nuthin , tough as nails, it 's quite more abrassion resistant than Big Game. XT holds more memory than Big Game. I 'd say that Big Game is somewhere in between XL and XT. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 They both my favorite lines for mono. However XT does seem more abrasive resistance than big game. With the zebra mussels here it's always a good thing to retie often. I think raul summed it up best. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 However XT does seem more abrasive resistance than big game. With the zebra mussels here it's always a good thing to retie often. Speaking of which, we don 't have zebra mussels down here but there are lakes like Zimapan where the "bottom" is made of chunk slate rock, got any idea how sharp them rocks are ? XL doesn 't survive to them too long Big Game does a lot better than XL but still check, cut and retie oftenly is a must. XT, yeah baby, that line works a lot better than the other two. Not that I don 't check, cut and retie oftenly, the catch is, what happens between you have just checked, cut and retied and the next, many times on the first couple of casts when fishing under such harsh environment the line gets worn a little and what if .......... you hook a bigun ? :-? ----> see ya later alligater. : Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 Big Game is more elastic than XT ( more stretch ) It is slightly more elastic, but I'm not sure that it would be noticeable (I never could). Anyway, the stats below are the results of a line-stretch test: Berkley Trilene Sensation 12.5cm Berkley Trilene XT 13.5cm Berkley Trilene Big Game 14.5cm For some reason, Trilene XL was not tested in the same weight-class, a line with "mucho" BOING factor, but nice line to work with. If abrasion-resistance is what you're looking for, you might try Trilene Sensation (or Ande Premium) 8-) Roger Quote
Super User flechero Posted April 3, 2008 Super User Posted April 3, 2008 Roger, Can you give the link for those... I'm curious as to the length of samples on those tests. Thanks Quote

Thanks I was wondering the same thing myself, so I could attach a percentage to the line rather than an arbitrary number. I'm afraid I don't have the link, but it may have been TackleTour, not sure.
