MSPbass Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Who thinks the Fenwick Technas are worth the extra cash over the HMG? I won't say money is no object, but because I probably will never have a huge arsenal of rods, I want to make sure the ones I have are quality. Do you guys think a weekend warrior, such as myself, would feel that much of a difference? I plan to make it my crankbait rod. I have one HMG now and love it. I'm sure I'd be happy with a new 6.5' Med/Fast, but I figure I could wait and save up a little for the Techna if folks really think its better. Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 Thechnas are excellent mid level priced rods and well worth the extra ca$h over the HMG. Quote
fishhawk Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 It depends on the intended use of the rod. If you are using worms, jigs, etc. that require "feel " the Techna is worth it. If for moving baits like cranks or spinnerbaits the HMG is actually better....Fenwick Pro Team Quote
Super User Micro Posted March 27, 2008 Super User Posted March 27, 2008 If the AV is a better rod than the HMG (and I'm sure it is), then it MUST be a very good rod, indeed. I really like my HMGs. Quote

I bought it because I like HMGs, and because it got a very good review at Tackle Tour for that very application. But I think the HMX 6'6" Medium would have been a better choice. That rod seems to have a significantly more "medium" action than my HMG. Quote
fishhawk Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Sorry FishCat I didn't read your whole post before my previous reply. Didn't see that your rod was for cranks, the HMG would still be better of the two. The best however may be the Fenwick Elite Tech Crankshaft. A little more money than Techna, but in my opinion it's the best crank rod ever made [3 models]. Check them out on the web. Which ever you buy look into the promotion to get a Columbia rain jacket free! This is a quality jacket not the usual promo junk! Quote
MSPbass Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 I checked out an Elite Tech just the other day. That "50/50" action is crazy. I think it might be too much for me. I have a goal this year to, pretty much, learn to fish cranks. I've been a plastic worm guy all my life. I'd try different things all the time, but that was my mainstay. Over the past few years, I've gotten more serious about the sport and have really tried to expand my knowledge and skills. This year, I want to learn how to fish cranks. I figured I should start out with a dedicated cranking rig. Well, dedicated in the sense that I would use it for crankbaits and spinners and chatterbaits too. I'm going to still keep things small though. Right now, I have a MH HMG that I use along with a MH spinning rig. That's it. I decided, a few years back, to dump all my old gear and rebuild. I planned to get a new reel and rod this Spring (l looked at 7' Techna or ETech Pitchin' stick) and use my current rig for cranks. But I know I really should have a good Medium rod for that. So I thought I'd put the new reel on the HMG and upgrade to a cranking rod. Was that too much information? Ha! You all just seem to really know your stuff here. I like the help. Plus, no one really understand how tricky decisions like this really are, except for other anglers. Right? For my level of fishing, it sounds like I would do just fine for my crankbaits if I stuck with another HMG. The Techna feels great and is a tad lighter, and I'd like to own one, but I'm not fishing every day. Heck, I'm not fishing every week. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 Someone here define HMG..... :-? Quote
Super User Raul Posted March 28, 2008 Super User Posted March 28, 2008 but I'm not fishing every day. Heck, I'm not fishing every week. And what that has to do with owning good quality tackle ? :-? I don 't fish every day, most of the times I don 't fish every weekend but that doesn 't stop me from owning top of the line rods n 'reels. Quote
MSPbass Posted March 28, 2008 Author Posted March 28, 2008 That's great man. But for me, I don't think a $400+ rod would be worth it. I'm not at the level where that kind of rod would mean anything to me. Plus, I couldn't justify that kind of cash. I'd rather have 2 pretty great rods than one super expensive one. You get me? Quote
Guest muddy Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Why ask a question of more experienced folks and then knock everything that they took the time to work with you? Your original question was about HMG or Techna AV. YOU SET THE STANSARD. It had nothing to do with wheter you should buy one 400 dollar rod or 2 cheap ones THAT BEING SAID::::: TECHN AV's are no where near 400 bucks depending on Sales( AMAZON RIGHT NOW) and normal price 199.99 they can be had for 169 to 179 the Elites arent even 4000 bucks Quote
MSPbass Posted March 29, 2008 Author Posted March 29, 2008 Whoa, hold on there. How the heck did you read that I wasn't appreciative of all the advise? I wasn't knocking anybody. I absolutely did not mean to sound that way, I assure you. Aside from talking to folks on the lake, this is the best way to get honest info about gear - from folks who really use the stuff. This helped me quite a bit. Raul is the one who called the Technas "excellent mid level priced rods". I called the HMG and Techna AV "pretty great rods". I think they're REALLY great rods! And they are NOT cheap. Maybe you weren't following this like I was sir, but I'm still sorry for ticking you off. Really. I learned quite a bit from this. The biggest thing was the exact answer to my original question: "Didn't see that your rod was for cranks, the HMG would still be better of the two." I'll go back to my local shop and look at the Elite Tech one more time, but I'm now pretty sure I'll go with another HMG. That way I can pick up a few fancy crankbaits with the money I saved. I would have not known that, and probably paid the extra $ for the Techna, if it weren't for the help of you experienced folks who did take the time to help me. THANK YOU. Quote
Guest muddy Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 Actually dollar for dollar the HMG is my favorite of the whole line. I have a Techna, because I got it used and at a great price, fine rod! The HMX's are aslo great, But my choice of druthers all my rods would be HMG's Quote
