dealing with line memory (*cough, P-Line CXX, cough*)

As a result of many online recommendations, I'm trying 20lb CXX on my jig rod, and I'm <this> close to getting rid of the stuff.

It's like a freakin' telephone cord, even after several applications of line conditioner and some decent hours being fished.

For those of you that love the stuff -- is there a trick to deal with the obscene memory, or do you simply deal with it because of the line's superior abrasion resistance?

I attempted to use the CXX in 20lb and had the same results....however, used 12 lb CXX in the past on a couple rigs without any problems. In my experience, most lines that I have tried in 17 lb or above have terrible memory.  My solution=braid.

No need for 20lb CXX for your jig rod, that's over kill.

15lb CXX would be plenty, and you shouldn't have as much trouble.

I'd be very surprised as to why people feel they need 20lb CXX for bass fishing aside from throwing swimbaits...

the lines i am about to list are each the most manageable best handling lines in their class.try one and be happy.

flouro = seguar invizx

braid = suffix

mono = cajun red CAST

Here's a trick I use before I ever load a rod in the boat.  

I take one end of the line and tie a loop knot on it.   (THis is often not necessary since I often keep a loop tied in the end of the line when the rod is stored)

Put the loop end around a static object, fence post, boat cleat, etc.

Now back off around 20-30 yds letting the line out.  Reel the line taut and the pull back straight on the line causing it to stretch.

Now reel back in and proceed to the lake.

This takes most of the memory out of just about any mono out there.

OP- Try the CX or the Floroclear and not the CXX.  Plus, like the others have said, 20lb is overkill for bass fishing.  I don't think I've ever used more than 15lb test.

That said, I agree with Brokejaw.  Unless you're throwing HEAVY baits, use the 17 lb. CXX.

I tossed my 12lb P-line. I only use it as tippet material for my fly rod now. I took roadwarriors recommendation and went with Yozuri Ultra soft hybrid line. Its supple and soft. None of the problems of P-line. I think they call it P line because of the "ping" sound as it flies off my spinning reel lol

At least with the ultrasoft if there is any memory, just apply a little tension and it straightens out.

Honestly, I only use 8-15lb.  The 15lb breaks at like 27lbs or so.  I'm not sure why the memory has a pretty big jump when you go from 15lb to the 17/20lb, but it does.  Try some 15lb.  I honestly don't notice the memory...I grew up using Trilene XT, and the CXX seems no worse.

Normally I'd 100% agree about 20lb being overkill.  However, I've been flipping jigs up around docks so that's the reason I went with the big line.

With that said, I'll drop to 15 and see what happens.

As good a line as CX Premium is, it too acquires a lot of memory. It is one of my peeves with CX Prem. or CXX and I just might if I need to in a pinch consider use of them only on a baitcast reel.

I have also used 12 and 15# CXX and they both have memory up the ying yang. I realize that memory  doesn't affect performance but it sure is ugly to look at.  :

I have 8# fluoroclear on a spinning reel and it has been on for nearly a year. While their is some memory, it is very manageable and seems to be fine.

You will also find that Evolution also acquires memory rather quickly.

Try #17 Cajun Red Casting and I think you will fall in love.

Try the CX Premium much softer and use KVD Line & Lure on it. You get a a better and longer lasting line treatment with the KVD versus something like reel magic.

As far as 20# being over kill, it just depends on the cover in the lake you fish and size fish in the lake. My lake is wal to wall salt cedars with some mesquite and willows scattered in. Plus pretty much hydrilla among all that in the summer.

For me, light line is 14#/15# I use use topwater, cranks and spinnerbaits. I use 20# CX Premium for t-rigs and 50# Power Pro for flipping & jigs.

Here is a picture of my grandson. The background shows a pretty typical area of the cover. This goes from the bank down to about 20'.  You could go with 10# in this lake, but you better bring lots of baits, cause you will lose lots of baits and fish.

Georgia Tech is one of the leading engineering schools in the country so how about you doing a project to see what can be done, from an engineering standpoint, to reduce or eliminate memory in fishing line?

It would be a wonderful project; you will receive an A for doing it; and maybe you will invent either a compound or a line that has lessor no memory and can have a small diameter with a very high abraision resistance and test.

Then you can market it; make millions; become a professional bass fisherman; have to fight all of the models off all the time; buy Lake Lanier; and retire at around 25.

Seriously, maybe you can do some work on eliminating or removing line memory while at Georgia Tech before those Dawgs acroos the way going East figure it out first. ;D

P.S.  Try silicone or DVD's Lure and Line Conditioning spray to help remove the memory.

Hmm...

I fished P-Line for a couple of years before discovering Yo-Zuri Hybrid and later, hybrid Ultra Soft. Memory was always an issue with P-Line and in cold weather it was MUCH worse!

I have been using Ultra Soft #12 (19.5 lb test) on all of my baitcasters for a couple of years. Recently I found a super deal on a 1 lb spool of #15 original formula Hybrid which I am experimenting with on a few rigs, and my jig rod in particular. I think you would like the line and it doesn't cost much to give it a try.

I have a spool of P-line 17# brought it 2-3 years ago.Used it once...now it's still on the shelf(200 yards of it)...Some reason i brought it and put it on my first baitcaster...Now that how you spell disaster!

 Like you, I tried some CXX just several days ago. Always used 12lb. mono (Stren) before. Always thought it was strong enough for where I fished when I first spooled it on. Figured I'd stay with 12lb. When I spooled the CXX on I used the KVD line conditioner. I was really expecting some memory. It was stiffer so I thought Oh Boy here go but there was really NO memory. Don't know if it was the conditioner or that I spooled it on just the night before but hopefully ;)the CXX is that good (in 12lb)...

A few points...

1) Well, I graduated in 2001, so getting an 'A' no longer motivates me.

2) Retire at 25? Missed again as I'm turning 30 in 2 months.

3)  Why would I buy Lanier?  There's barely enough water in there

4) the Dawgs figure something out? Ha! They're still working on tying their shoes. That's a graduate level course in Athens

Agree with you. I use CXX 20-25 lbs for a while and had the same results, true that doesn't affect casting but is a pain.

P-Line Evolution is a much better line. I use it from 10 to 25 lbs

with the cxx you will notice the higher lb ratings the more memory you will get .... i use 15 for jigs ... it works great more than enough power ...

I've used P-Line CXX as my main line for several years now. When using reaction baits - crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, topwaters - with 10-17lb CXX line memory/coiling hasn't been a problem. Using 15lb CXX for jigs, texas rigs and especially Senkos is another story. After 2-3 weeks of fishing, an average of 3-4 a week, line memory is a problem. It's not as bad with jigs and texas rigs since the weight of the lure pulls some of the coils out but with Senkos memory will result in coiling line above the surface.

This year I tried KVD's Line & Lure Conditioner for the first time and it has definitely worked. The line is much more resistant to memory and I can cast a bit farther. The true test of how well KVD's works will be how the line acts when fishing Senkos.

The key to getting maximum effectiveness from KVD's is how you apply it. When I spool new line on I run the line through a small cloth saturated with it. Then I add a few more sprays on the spooled line. The night before I go fishing I spray the spool a few more times.  8-)
