Rod Transportation?

I don't have a boat to fish out of yet so I fish a lot of my local lakes on the bank.  I usually carry 3 or 4 rods with me when I'm out.  Last year I just bundled them all up and put a garbage bag around the reels because I hate to lay expensive equipment down on the dirt.  I'm always on the move when I'm fishing on the banks.  Do any of you have the same problem?  What is the best way to keep my rods protected while I lay them down and when I'm on the move? Rod Bags ,Rod totes? Has anyone used any of these products?

You had better hurry up and get a boat or cut down on the number of rods you carry with you. I know you think you need a rod for every technique, but you don't.

I have a rod tote that I use to stow my stuff sometimes. It might be a little cumbersome for you because it holds eight. It's a well-made product though. You might look into some neoprene reel covers. I've never used them, but it seems like they may accomplish your goal.

i bank fish alot and only have to take 2 rods if that one baitcaster one spinning but that is because i bring only what will catch fish for the place i am fishing.if you cant do that then setup a base camp and fish one large area and when your done move to a new spot and fish another large area you dont have to take all those around the whole lake

I just like to have several fishing rods with me because I like the different actions.

For Example:

For jerkbaits I usually use a spinning rod but I like on that has a nice moderate power throughout the rod.  

Finesse fishing I like a spinning rod that has a little more backbone.

For throwing jigs I like to use a medium heavy baitcasting rod.

For spinners and popper I like a medium baitcasting rod.

I would recommend a lightweight backpack that has support straps or clips on the sides of them. That way you can put your tackle in the backpack and carry the poles attached to the sides. I have something like that when I go into the woods for flyfishing or panfish. Here is a picture for you. I lay the bag down when I am fishing one rod and the other is upright ready for use when I want to switch. The reel is usually attached but I didnt have it attached for the photo.

Now my rod is a 2 piece and only 5'6 so you might look like your carrying a CB radio and antennae on your back lol but it keeps the rod upright and ready for use when I have it laied down.

I have the exact same tote.  THat's what I store my rods on in my garage.  Should work fine for bank fishing, however, when fishing from the bank I usually only carry one, maybe two (usually spinning reels) so as to cut down on the clutter.

I did some shore river fishing last year. If I plan on doing more, I am going to pick up an old golf club cart. The 2 wheeled cart you drag behind while walking the course.

I use this. I hold both rods when i'm moving under low trees. I also attach a rag on it so I can wipe my hands. Very comfortable and I dont have to worry about people stealing my rod.

I saw someone shore fishing had something like this but in addition it had 2 more fold out legs so it wont fall to the ground or you dont lay it on the ground.

It works well for me.  The hard part was finding the right pack.  Watch out for low trees and your rod tips though

Look like you need to do a little building. I made this to address that exact concern before I realized the is something cool is already on the market.

I call it a rod quiver. With it, I can hold 3 rods in one hand.

There is one downside to the backpack deal. If you're travelling through brush, forget it. I initially added straps so I could where my quiver on my back but trees and other things just get in the way. I found out it was far better to hand carry when negotiating through the brush.

Here it is in action. I went fishing yesterday and easily ported 4 rods and the ones not in use ever touched the ground.

I know, I'm a geek, but it really works well and to me, it's Sweeeet!

Good questions. You answered it. I set whereever.  Usually I lay it down flat or let it stand upright as shown here:

If the ground is such that it wouldn't be wise to lay it down flat, I just prop it on my tackle bag like this:

Since I usually carry 3 rods, there is no third rod on the flat side of the triangle so when it is lying down, the other rigs don't touch the ground.

The other benefit is that when I prop them on my bag in the car for transport, no matter how bumpy the road is, the rods don't bang around and hit each other.

Hey islandbass,

Great ingenuity there!  I made something similar to that last year but mine had some plastic parts so it wasn't very durable.  I could make the same thing you could with some plywood and some dowels right?  I like the velcro you put on there to secure your rods. ;D  I think that I will either make one like that or buy a Tote um pole.  The tote um pole can hold quite a  few rods and has a shoulder strap.  The price isn't bad either. Great ideas and advice everybody!
