Hello folks,

I received my first Daiwa reel in the mail today (Zillion 100 SHLA) and it's awesome! But..............

I have some questions for the Daiwa fans. It seems that if I loosen the drag right off on the Zillion the spool doesn't engage (when I turn the handle the spool doesn't spin). Is this normal? I tried this (loosening the drag right off) on my Curado 101D and my Chronarch 51 Mg and it doesn't happen :-?. Also, the manual suggests that you use the supplied "special oil" on the left and right spool shaft bearings after every outing, is this actually necessary? If so, I'm going to run out of the "special oil" real quick. Where can I buy the "special oil" or can I use a substitute (Shimano oil ;D)?

Sorry if these are newbie questions but this is my first Daiwa so I want to be fully informed.

Much appreciated,

P.S. If there is anything else I should know as a new Daiwa owner, please feel free to let me know.

I'm not one of the Daiwa "masters" here, however I only own Daiwa baitcasters, in fact I have 6 Alphas, 2 Sols and 2 Zillions all left handed.  With that said all my Daiwa's will totally disengage with the spool if the drag is loosed all the way.  As for the oil, I would say a few times a year will be plenty unless you fish everyday, as I fish about 3 days a week and only lubricate a couple times a year, however all my rods/reels stay in a rod locker in the Triton too.

For what it's worth,

Steve

Congratulations and welcome to the Daiwa Clan. ;)  I think that ReelMech can answer your question best, as far as the loosened drag that is totaly normal.

Look's like to me you have a grasp on the "Daiwa Master" situation, especially the 6 Alphas thing. I thought I was bad.

The disengagement of the spool when the drag is backed off, is normal. On your Shimano reels when you back the drags off, their is still enough pressure on the pads to be able to crank the reel as if you had the drags set. Again this is just a result of the differences in drags systems...

You know no one has ever sent me a Zillion with the special oil and said use only this oil.....

My oils that I use are the same as the Shimano oils and no one that has ever had me service a Zillion has ever complained, also they have never had to re-oil every outing. Unless your Zillion is using ABEC7 Ceramics, IMPO I see no reason to oil that often.

Enjoy your new reel...

Thanks a lot guys. Redlinerobert, thanks for the warm welcome to the Daiwa clan. I have a feeling that this won't be my only Daiwa for long :o ;D. I'm glad that the drag thing is normal, that's definitely a relief.

Sounds good to me reelmechanic.

Enjoy your new reel...

Will do! ;)

If you don't mind me asking gentlemen, what applications/techniques do you use your Zillions for? And, is there anything else I should know as a newbie Daiwa owner?

Much appreciated,

I will be using my 2 Zillions for flipping,  and frogs.  I believe that you will be able to do about anything that you want, however it is better suited towards 3/8 oz. lures.

Keep up the good work guys ! ( yeah right, look who 's talking  ::o )

He who dies with the most fishin ' stuff wins the game.

But still, I have as many Shimanos as I have Daiwas, ya know, to keep the balance.  ;)

Welcome to the family!!!!!!

The Daiwa oil you can get it from Daiwa Serv/Parts (562) 802-9589, Ext 8. The bottle that came with your reel should last you a while for your basic care.

ReelMech changed the oil in all mine to his/Shimano oil a couple of years ago and this is what I've been using since. Highly recommended. The only situation that I use a different one is for the  ceramic  bearings.

Don't mix different oils.

Best luck ;)
