Morning all....

First snow of the season today ;).....

Got some great ideas from fellow forumites on what rod is right for what job. How about the favored reels?

Brands, ratios, line capacities, etc.??

What reels are best for what jobs, (jigs, spinners, cranks) and what do you folks use ??

Wow, there are many quality offerings from different manufactures. Some reels will always win the hearts of the particular owners and they will recommend them exclusively.  I recommend you do your "reel research" on tackletour.com and then go out and try them on your rods.  Walk in the store with your rod(s) and try different reels on them, you'll be surprised how similar reels feel completely different on them.  With that said I still prefer Shimano reels, most of the time.

I have bought used and returned 2 Quantum Energy PTs so avoid those, but have had great luck with Shimano Scorpion 1000 for finesse applications (Made for the Japanese market, its not a domestic reel), Shimano's New Citica D (A good budget reel workhorse), and Shimano's Calcutta Line if your a round reel fan. I recently sold one of the original Silver Calcuttas that I purchased a long long time ago, so they are dependable to say the least, I also like how easy they are to take apart and clean compared to their low profile cousins.  The Abu Garcia Record is also a very nice round reel, but I primarily use mine for Snook fishing in brackish/saltwater. Also have owned/used Daiwa reels, specifically the Daiwa TD-X a buttery smooth reel.  I have yet to try the Abu Garcia's Revo series, but I am waiting for my Revo Premier to be delivered and will post my review later on.

Spinning Reels

Have used Shimano Sustain and Stradics, no problem ever.  Bought a Quantum Energy PTi to try something different, but guess what.....? I returned it for warranty less than 6 months after owning it for a bad antireverse then sold it on eBay.   I am sure some Quantum fans may chime in and say they are the best thing since sliced bread, but it hasn't been my experience with any of the reels I've tried.

Hope this helps you a bit and good luck researching, that's half the fun  ;D

Well, the old TDZ ain 't around no more but you can substitute it with a Chronarch 50/51 Mg and from that moment you won 't think you 'll need another reel for anything except another Chronarch Mg.

There is not a "best", just favorites. If you want to seach back through this section, you might find a few hundred threads on the topic!

(Suggestions also depend on your pricing point).

I should have been more specific.....

Not by brand but by gear ratio, ball bearings and spool capacity, which reels should be used for which applications.

Also, I am a spinning reel guy, so thanks for the info. on baitcasters, but I am specifically talking spincast reels.

Sorry bout' that all!

Thanks for any advice in advance!!!

You must be confused...

If your interest is only spincast, just go with the Zebco 33, but if you plan to stick with bass fishing, you're going to need to step-up. Spincasting equipment is for kids and people who don't fish.

Really...

Not that I care what Skeet Reese or any other pro uses but I see MANY spincast setups on TV on Saturday and Sunday. I take a  offense with that comment. The last (and first) tournament I entered, many $50,000.00 bass boats stocked with baitcasting setups drove away with ZERO fish. At least I caught ONE bass on my Walmart Johnny Quest spincast set-up!!!

I did NOT mean to be offensive, just brutally honest.

I'm giving you some straight up advice which is what

I thought you were asking for on this thread.

You might have said spincasting in the first place. I  will delete my suggestions, as you asked for advice and weren't clear. Roadwarrior brings many years of experience to these forums, and he really knows what he is talking about.

Hey Muddy...

I don't doubt Road warrior at all...take it easy Muddy. I have learned from reading his posts on everything. I read and listen to ALL members on the forum newbies and the veterans alike. I'm sorry I was not specific enough. and I corrected that, I thought. I just don't think anyone is less of an angler or sportsman based on waht reel they use.

Sorry if you were offended...

I am not offended :;) I answered you on the basis of baitcasting. I used to use spincst equipment, it's been quite some time. The ABU's were my reel of chice, but  I do not know if they still are made the same way, if at all. I made the jump to baitcasting and don't have current info on thos products.

Are you talking about spincast reels or just plain old spinning reels. I am surprised no one asked you to clarify yet. I actually like spincasters but they are nowhere near the quality of a decent spinning reel or baitcasters, sure you can catch fish on them but pretty sure no half way serious bass fisherman uses them. If you are serious about fishing I would think you would at least want a good spinning reel. Then you can mees around with baitcasters.

You are right.... SPINNING REEL (open faced reel) like the old Mitchell 300 reel. Not a push button.... If that's what RW was taking about, I agree with him!!!! my mistake ;D

Yeah spincast refers to a push button reel which was what RW was talking about. As far as spinning reels RW actually prefers them over baitcasters.

I had a feeling you meant spinning. ;) Might want to clarify that in your other thread unless you are  really talking about spincast there
