Tonight was the initial Thursday night tournament held on the Upper Potomac River and I caught a new PB. Throwing a Keitech Crazy Flapper in GP over Orange I hooked into a monster and thought I had the winning bass for the evening. When we actually got it into the net it was about a 20lb Flathead catfish which is a new PB but quite a disappointment. I was really hoping it was a big SM that would put me into the money.

The lakes I fish are well populated with channel cats and they frequently hit what bass do, especially scented soft plastics.

I grab the net thinking big bass but the continual digging eventually gives it away.

20# flat was a serious fight.

You may have been disappointed but in my humble opinion you caught one of the best eating fresh water fish that swims. Pity those who have never tried one.

How long did you think you had a bass? I've caught enough flatheads on lures, I can often call it before I set the hook that it's a flathead and not a bass. They inhale a bait so hard, it feels like someone grabbed your bait and yanked on the other end. At least a 20 on a flipping rod doesn't take too long to boat if you can get it away from heavy cover.

Caught my first flathead on a crank about a couple months ago. It was about 26 inches or so... hit the lure exactly as you described.
