Wacky Worm

I think I've only used an unweighted wacky rig in current a handful of times. Like @Bird, it's far more common for me to add a little bit of weight to help it get down a little more efficiently.

I just remembered something about wacky worming…… Had a guy tell me, he put a wacky worm, with a bobber, drug it around behind him while he fished. As he would work the bank and structure trolling along.  It just followed him along while he worked a Tex rig worm.

He admitted it wasn’t 100% effective, and it was sometimes a pain keeping an eye on it. But he claimed he caught fish once in a while. 

I might just have to try that one time…. Providing the situation is right.

I’ve tried similar things, it’s mostly a nightmare for me . It will get stuck, especially when you go to get the lure you are casting un stuck. And then I back up over the line other times, clown show level stunts is what I pull

+1.   To make matters worse, the rare occasion I do get a bite, there's only two possible outcomes; bait is gone or half gone....or a 9" bass is gut-hooked

For me the WW gets bit alot but my hook up ratio is horrible. Almost every fish I do catch is gut hooked.

For me its my main confidence bait.

But Im a serious line watcher so the faintest tick or movement get a set.

Hook sets are free.

Ive also found that a super lightweight set up ( NRX+ 852 paired with a 2500 Abu zenon with 10lb braid to 8lb flouro leader and size 2 dropshot hook ) I very rarely get them gut hooked.

After years of struggling I forced myself into learning to fish a wacky and it's the best decision as an angler that I have ever made. I have caught fish, both pleasure fishing and in tournaments, with that rig when I'm fairly certain that I would have zero'd before when power fishing wasn't working...   

 

This is something I have learned through trial and error - 

 

An inactive fish will sometimes eat a wacky worm... 

An aggressive fish will almost always eat a wacky worm...

 

To me that's a 75% chance that if I put that worm where bass are that they are gonna eat it..... 

 

 

Medium/Fast Spinning Combo with 8lb braid to a 10lb copolymer leader with a size 2 vmc or Berkley Fusion 19 wacky hook is my main wacky setup....

 

If fishing around bushes, wood, or anything prone to hanging up I texas-rig the worm with a 1/32oz bullet weight on a 3/0 thin finesse wide gap worm hook....

You find the current slackwater eddies and work it in and around the seam as well as for roaming bass throughout the pool. I discovered this last year fishing a bigger river than normal and had sone crazy good days. Best part was its so easy my the. 6 year old was catching nice ones as well.
