optimator Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 This might sound like a fishing story but…. I had one morning at the pond where I caught my PB in 4 casts with a TRD I caught a bass, bluegill, crappie and a trout. It was pretty hilarious ? 2 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted June 2, 2023 Super User Posted June 2, 2023 Funny. I just boxed up all my Ned rig stuff and mailed it to my friend in MN. Heads baits. All of it. I kept two bags of green pumpkin Finesse TRD to Tex-rig if I get desperate. I’m over it. 1 Quote

I've got some strange jigheads I can swap hooks out on, little hood with little plastics on heavy heads... go get'em boys 20 minutes ago, BrianMDTX said: I’ve caught a grand total of one bass on a Ned. A Texas rig with a 1/8 oz.bullet weight can work also. Anything heavier or less streamlined than that is an algae magnet. Weedless is not algaeless. Quote

Many who first ned go too heavy and think they have to "feel" the bait and keep contact with bottom when in fact mid-west finesse fishing is a "no feel" presentation that's mainly swimming and gliding with only occasional bottom contact, hence the 1/32 & 1/16 heads. 2 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted June 2, 2023 Super User Posted June 2, 2023 Ah yes. The Ned rig is a fantastic gateway drug. When you’re ready for something more… exciting… boy, you wouldn’t believe the rod bending action that a shaky head possesses. You may never go back to your ned rigs. 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted June 2, 2023 Super User Posted June 2, 2023 Being I use a lot of Yum Dingers , I have a never ending supply of torn up ones for Neds. They catch fish but I lose an awful lot to snags. Gizits seem to catch larger bass for me so I find myself going back and forth with them. 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted June 2, 2023 Super User Posted June 2, 2023 When the Ned rig first came out I bought some and tried them. I had one good early spring morning when I caught 11 fish on one bank. Then the annual.weeds came in, and the Ned wasn't working good in the weeds. I went back to my small finesse plastic worms. I can fish them in and around most all cover. 2 Quote

Once the weeds start to come in relatively thick (like now), it gets hung up way too much. Better off tex rigging at this point. I've definitely done better on smallmouth because of the lack of weeds to get hung up on. 1 Quote

I almost never fish a shakyhead anymore because a Ned catches more and bigger fish for me ? I've caught a bunch of fish over 5, up to nearly 7lbs on a Ned, and won quite a few tournament dollars with them. I really appreciate the "They only catch little fish", crowd ? 9 Quote

Could be a regional thing. Shaky head in NC is a big fish bait, to my knowledge. I can’t speak for TX yet 1 Quote

I’ve seen you post some 6+ on shakey in sub freezing temps. Maybe even some 7s, can’t fool me 2 1 Quote

Zebra mussels and bottom algae really make fishing a shakyhead here problematic. It just doesn't touch the numbers or average size I catch on a Ned rig even the places I can use it. 1 Quote
galyonj Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 This was fun. Can we fight about hook size on the jig heads for this presentation next? 1 Quote

Super User Munkin Posted June 2, 2023 Super User Posted June 2, 2023 They are dink magnets for LM but work well for pressured river SM. I had such good luck on the little beaver one I had a bunch of similar ones made. Don't have to worry about losing any now as there are a lot of spares. Allen 2 Quote

Just took a 5.25 smallie today on a Canada Craw ned. The contention that neds just take small fish is false. Neds take all fish, and most are small . But they also take big ones. Quote
