Rat fishing experience

Fishing from the bank at a local creek and went to change baits to find this. It didn't want to get out either.  Had to flip over the bag to get it out.

When I was a kid I had a gray and white rat named Pepper. He knew his name and would come when called. We could free roam him in the house. He climbed up your arm to sit on your shoulder. He would clean my ears. Really was like a miniature dog. I made a tiny homemade leash for him and would take him on walks outside.

Rats are smarter than people give them credit for.   Quite impressive when you can train them.   I had a friend that had a bunch of rats and they were all trained pretty well. It was neat.

Yessir, there's a reason we have "lab rats." 

 

They get a bad rap because of the plague. But we now know it was the fleas and lice responsible for the plague, and that it was humans who carried and spread them the most. But that stigma hasn't gone away and probably never will. They're actually very clean animals despite their other stereotype of being filthy dumpster animals - ALL animals in the cities dig in dumpsters for food.

 

Plus the whole icky tail thing which actually isn't that bad.

I saw the title of this thread and thought of the good ol' days when hollow body frogs were known as Rats.   In my mind a hollow body frog is still a rat.

Wife thinks it may be a pet someone let loose. Went back and there was a second albino one that would come within reach. She fed them a bagel which they took back to their nest.

OMG, what is that thing?   The last time I saw something like that was in London following the Pied Piper.

 

I once had an old fishing buddy that loved to throw weird stuff.  One day he pulled out a huge furry rat lure he bought from Cabelas. It was brown with shaggy fur and looked more like a squirrel than a rat.  Whenever he pulled it out of his tackle box and tied it on I would kid him about it.   I didn't think he would ever catch a bass on that thing.  One club tournament in Kissimmee, he had it tied on and was pulling it over some offshore hydrilla.   Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a giant hole in the water as his rat lure disappeared.  The bass that ate that lure was 9 pounds.  I never kidded him about it again. ?

I have a bag of them downstairs and a handful in my frog box. I might even have one in the original packaging from before Manns bought them from original creator (whose name is escaping me right now). There were three original shapes- the one above is the rat. There was a ‘frog’ which was a wider back end. And there was a popper like one that was more squared. My grandmas bait shop carried them and we fished them in the ponds all through the 90’s. They came on a piece of card paper in single plastic bags stapled to the card, maybe 12 on a card.

Loyd Tallent.   If you have one of his baits, that would be a real collectors item in my opinion.  He invented them in the 70s if my memory is correct.

In 1929, Heddon released the meadow mouse lure.  It was very realistic in it's day and popular with bass anglers.  I had a NOS Heddon Meadow Mouse with the original box in my lure collection for a number of years.  I sold it when the value got out of hand.

That’s the one. I’ll have to check if I have a full card of them. I know my dad does at home. I have probably 2 dozen of assorted colors. I think the originals only came in black, chartreuse, and white. Then Manns added brown and grey. Manns also came out with the mouse and the weedless spook.
