clemsondds Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Getting ready to put two 12” humminbird/garmin graphs on the boat. But I keep my boat in a storage unit and don’t want to leave them on the boat since they are held on by just ram mounts. So how would you store two 12” units when not in use? What’s the best way to transport them? Thanks Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 Something like this would work - large size will hold 2 12" units https://www.amazon.com/Electronics-FishFinder-Lowrance-Humminbird-Raymarine/dp/B07D1W1GWZ 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 I have a padded metal case for that purpose that I bought at Harbor Freight. Quote

But seems a little steep ($119) for a glorified cooler ha. But yeh looks like it would work. 2 hours ago, Jig Man said: I have a padded metal case for that purpose that I bought at Harbor Freight. Do you have a link or anything? That’s what I’m thinking I’ll have to do. Just hate to have to carry two separate cases around. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 9, 2022 Super User Posted January 9, 2022 I always took the head units off the quick release Ram type mounts and stowed the units with covers on in a rear boat compartment with bath towels for padding. If the boat is garaged no need for a case. Tom 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted January 9, 2022 Global Moderator Posted January 9, 2022 @dgkasper58 has it right if you want a case. I personally just take them off when not in use. They travel to a from the lake in my truck and they’re in a drawer in our spare bedroom when at home. Quote

Shimano_1 Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 I use one of the green plano sportsmans trunks from cabelas. Basically a heavy duty tote. Holds both my helix 12's and one 93sv perfectly. Think it was 15 or 20 bucks Quote
Johnbt Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 I have a plastic Garmin screen cover for my 9" Vivid. It easily fits in an old padded laptop case (the 5' or 6" wide kind) with the RAM ball mount base still attached. The medium double socket arm fits in the other side of the bag. The shoulder strap is handy for the trip from the truck into the house. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted January 23, 2022 Super User Posted January 23, 2022 Mine are on ball mounts and came with the plastic covers. I open the mount to release the ball, put the covers on them, throw them in the back of the truck and put them on a shelf in the shed. Along with all of the other junk I keep in there. I'm not saying they are junk, just an expression, there's multiple thousands of dollars worth of other "junk" in there also. I could care less if they get a little "used" looking from handling and not being in a case. To me, that's like buying a 4WD truck and then not wanting to get it dirty and scratched up. I buy one to drive in places I wouldn't want to walk through. 1 Quote

Really, the only way they should get scratched or "used" looking is if you drop them. I have a 4WD truck and I can say with 100% positivity that I try to keep it free of scratches, dents, and rust every day that I own it. Of course it's going to get dirty. That's why I wash it religiously. But damage to the body, no way. Quote
Deephaven Posted January 23, 2022 Posted January 23, 2022 Mine are on the shelf in the basement....but I wouldn't mind a more glorious and protective way of storing them. Quote
clemsondds Posted January 24, 2022 Author Posted January 24, 2022 Well they are a little awkward in size and shape…so a case is just to help transport them. It’s a side benefit that they are protected. So far I’m liking the gun case and the pelican type case. I won’t pick them up for another week or two so I’ll have to see how thick they are with the ram mounts before I make a final decision. Thanks everyone for your help! Quote
Deephaven Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 I will also add a 12" on a Ram mount sort of defeats the reason for the Ram mount as you can't really move them as they over whelm the ball. Need to really crank them down. Quote

Deephaven Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 I am just about to upgrade the mounts....or am shopping for ones to replace my rams. They were fine with 9's, but even with grip tape on them they are completely overwhelmed by the 12's. Mine is a tiller too and in the back so they have less wave force than ones mounted further up. 1 Quote

Are you using 'B' size (1") on those Rams? If you are, moving up to 'D' size (2.5") might fix the problem. Quote

Theirs were mounted at the tiller of a 20 foot fiberglass boat too. Eventually they just mounted the original bracket to the tiller console area. There are some really heavy duty mounts out there. The balzout mount looks pretty sturdy but it’s not cheap. 1 Quote
